What Is Shell V+ Rewards?
Shell V+ Rewards is Shell South Africa's fuel loyalty programme — swipe your free V+ card at any of 580+ Shell stations and earn instant cashback on every litre you pump. You also earn 0.5% back on selected items in Shell Select convenience stores. The cashback goes straight to your V+ balance and can be spent on fuel or anything in-store. The base return is modest (under 1% back), but it costs nothing and requires zero effort beyond handing over your card.
When Is Shell V+ Rewards Worth It?
Without effort: R2,500/month on fuel → ~R223/year back
With the 3 moves: Never miss a scan, redeem regularly, catch promotions → ~R223–280/year back
Recent changes: Shell relaunched V+ Rewards in early 2025 with digital vouchers, online promotions, and a Spin & Win feature. The programme passed 3.4 million members and R1 billion in total rewards redeemed. Won Best Fuel Loyalty Programme in 2024.
How It Works
Where it works: Shell service stations nationwide (~580 locations) and Shell Select convenience stores.
What you earn: R0.15 cashback per litre of fuel. 0.5% cashback on selected Shell Select products. Capitec bank customers earn R0.20 per litre instead.
How you get it back: Swipe your V+ card and enter your PIN to pay for fuel or anything in the Shell Select store with your cashback balance. R1 earned = R1 spent. Simple.
What it costs: Free. No joining fee, no card fee, no monthly charges.
How to sign up: Ask any Shell attendant for a V+ card — you'll need your ID and mobile number. Register by scanning the QR code on the back of the card or dialling 1207368#. Alternatively, register on the V+ Rewards website. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Good to know: Your V+ card must be swiped before the attendant processes payment — if you forget, there's no way to claim those rewards afterwards. Cashback can only be spent within Shell's network (fuel or Shell Select). You cannot transfer it to a bank account.
The 3 Moves That Actually Matter
1. Never Forget to Scan — Keep Your Card in SuperCards
The single biggest leak in this programme is forgetting your card. In South Africa's full-service forecourt model, you need to hand your V+ card to the attendant before they start pumping. Miss it once a week and you're losing R40–100/year for nothing. Keep your V+ card in SuperCards so it's always one tap away — no digging through wallets.
2. Use Your Cashback Regularly — Don't Let It Expire
V+ cashback expires 12 months from the date it's earned. That sounds generous, but it sneaks up on people who rarely check their balance. Get into the habit of spending down your V+ balance every few fill-ups — just swipe the V+ card, enter your PIN, and let it cover part of your fuel cost. Treat it as a discount you've already earned, not savings for later.
3. Check the Website for Promotions Before You Fill Up
The V+ Rewards website runs periodic bonus promotions, digital vouchers, and competitions (including a Spin & Win feature). Check before filling up to see if there's an active deal — it takes 10 seconds and occasionally delivers genuine extras on top of your base cashback.
Get Your Cashback Out (Best → Worst)
Pay for fuel — swipe your V+ card at the pump, enter your PIN. R1 cashback = R1 off your fuel. Instant and frictionless.
Buy anything at Shell Select — same value, same process. Useful for grabbing a coffee or snacks with accumulated rewards.
There's a way to stretch your Shell fuel savings significantly further — see Pro Tips below.
Letting cashback sit unused — rewards expire after 12 months. If you rarely visit Shell, your balance slowly evaporates. Use it or lose it.
Watch Out For
- Cashback expires after 12 months from date of issue. Each transaction starts its own 12-month clock. If you fill up monthly, the earliest rewards expire first.
- Card must be scanned before payment. No exceptions, no retroactive crediting. This is the most common complaint.
- In-store exclusions: Tobacco, lubricants, car wash, phone cards, and municipal services don't earn the 0.5% cashback.
- Verify your account when you first register. Users have reported sign-in issues and the Spin & Win feature not always working — check that everything is set up correctly before relying on the programme.
When to Skip Shell V+ Rewards
- If you can fill up at Sasol instead. Sasol Rewards pays R0.30 per litre — literally double Shell's base rate. If a Sasol station is equally convenient, the maths clearly favour Sasol.
- If you spend under R1,000/month on fuel. Your annual return drops below R90, which is a negligible saving.
- If your bank's fuel rewards point you elsewhere. FNB eBucks works at Engen, Absa Rewards at Sasol, Nedbank Greenbacks at BP. Using your bank's preferred brand typically pays better than Shell V+ alone.
