What Is Virgin Active Rewards?
Virgin Active Rewards is the loyalty layer built into South Africa's largest premium gym chain — 136 clubs across SA, Botswana, and Namibia, with 634,000 members. Hit your personal weekly goal and you build towards Spin to Win and Milestone rewards. The real savings, though, come from medical aid integrations: Discovery Vitality members can get up to 75% back on their monthly fees. Without that, expect occasional freebies, not a weekly smoothie. With Vitality, you could save R11,000+.
Is Virgin Active Rewards Worth It?
Without effort: Pay your membership, train occasionally, get nothing back. The rewards programme only counts weeks in which you hit your personal weekly goal.
With the 3 moves: Hit your weekly goal every week, protect your streak, and pick off-peak if you can → five Milestone choice rewards plus occasional Spin to Win, plus R4,800–R8,400/year saved on off-peak fees.
Recent changes: Membership fees jumped ~30% in early 2026 — well above the 20.5% industry average. The free month of membership at 52 weeks was discontinued at the end of 2025. New Collection Country Club opened in Cape Town (Feb 2026). Premier membership now costs R1,670/month, up R100 from 2025.
How Does Virgin Active Rewards Work?
Where it works: 136 Virgin Active clubs across Southern Africa. Rewards redeemable at in-club Kauai and Nü outlets. Partner rewards from brands like Biogen and Garmin now come at Milestones and other reward moments, no longer by tier.
What you earn: Complete your personalised weekly actions (club visits, classes or other activities) and you make a Move. A reward is no longer guaranteed each week: you get a Spin to Win roughly every fourth Move and a choice reward at Milestones after 4, 16, 28, 40 and 52 Moves.
How you get it back: No points-to-cash conversion.
What it costs: Membership from R600/month (Club, varies by location) to R3,600+/month (Collection). Joining fee: R199–R599 depending on club tier. 12-month contract standard.
How to sign up: Online at virginactive.co.za — takes 5 minutes. To use Rewards, accept the Rewards terms. You can scan your membership card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Member perks: The Bronze/Silver/Gold tiers and tier points are gone, so tier-linked extras — tier partner discounts — no longer apply.
Good to know: Each visit must be 30+ minutes with both entry and exit scans. Only one qualifying visit per day counts. Miss your weekly goal without a Streak Freeze and your progress drops back to your last Checkpoint, not to zero. Vouchers expire in 7 days. Not all clubs have a Kauai outlet.
How to Get the Most From Virgin Active Rewards
1. Hit Your Weekly Goal Every Week
Your weekly actions are personalised (visits, classes or other activities), so check what counts each week. Every successful week is a Move, and Moves unlock Spin to Win and the five Milestone choice rewards. Keep your membership card in SuperCards so you never forget to scan at the turnstile.
2. Protect Your Streak
Streak Freezes protect missed weeks. Miss a week without a Streak Freeze and your progress drops back to your last Checkpoint, not to zero.
3. Choose Off-Peak If Your Schedule Allows
Off-peak memberships (access 8 AM–4 PM weekdays, all day weekends) save R400–R700/month compared to full access at the same club. That's R4,800–R8,400/year. You can enter before 4 PM and stay until close. If you work from home, study, or are retired, this is the single biggest money move — bigger than any reward.
How to Use Virgin Active Rewards Benefits
Milestone choice rewards — up to five (after 4, 16, 28, 40 and 52 successful Moves).
Spin to Win — roughly every fourth successful Move. A bonus, not a weekly guarantee.
Partner rewards — Biogen, Garmin and other brands, offered at Milestones and other reward moments. Useful if you'd buy the brand anyway.
The real savings aren't in the rewards programme itself — see Pro Tips for how medical aid integration can cut your fees by 75%.
Virgin Active Rewards — What to Watch Out For
- No reward every week anymore. Most successful weeks only build progress towards the next Spin or Milestone.
- Vouchers expire in 7 days. Claim your reward, then use it. Forgotten vouchers vanish.
- The 30% fee hike. 2026 increases hit many members hard. Check your contract — some campaign contracts lock in rates for the term.
When to Skip Virgin Active Rewards
- If you just want weights and cardio: Planet Fitness (R400–R900/month) or budget gyms like Just Gym (R200–R300/month) deliver the basics for half the price. VA's rewards don't offset the premium.
- If you won't train every week: The rewards programme only counts weeks in which you hit your weekly goal, and even then a reward isn't guaranteed.
- If your club doesn't have Kauai or pool/sauna: Without the extras, you're paying Virgin Active prices for a Planet Fitness experience.
