What Is the Spur Family Club?
The Spur Family Club is the loyalty programme for Spur Steak Ranches — South Africa's biggest family restaurant chain with 300+ locations. Scan your bill QR code through the Spur app after every meal and earn 5% back in points toward R50 meal vouchers. For a restaurant loyalty programme, 5% is genuinely good — most competitors offer less. Families with kids get extra value through free birthday meals.
When Is the Spur Family Club Worth It?
Without effort: Dine at Spur for R1,500/month, scan your bill each time → ~R750/year in vouchers
With the 3 moves: Add birthday vouchers, order through the app, and never miss a scan → realistically R800–900/year
Recent changes: The programme has shifted fully to app-based scanning — physical card numbers no longer work at the till. A new Coffee Reward feature was added in late 2025, though details are limited. Spur Corporation is expanding aggressively, with 56 new restaurants planned for 2026.
How It Works
Where it works: Spur Steak Ranches only. Sister brands (Panarottis, John Dory's, RocoMamas, The Hussar Grill) each have their own separate loyalty apps.
What you earn: 5% of your bill (excluding VAT and tip) accumulated as points. Once you reach R1,000 in qualifying spend, a R50 voucher is automatically loaded to your profile.
How you get it back: R50 meal vouchers, redeemable at any Spur restaurant for dine-in, collection, or delivery.
What it costs: Free. Always has been.
How to sign up: Register on the Spur website — takes 2 minutes. Your digital card is available immediately. You can also pick up a physical card at any Spur, but you still need the Spur app to scan bills and earn points. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Member perks: Kids registered in the Secret Tribe get a free meal, drink, and ice cream on their birthday — one of the better kids' birthday freebies in SA. Adults get a R50 birthday voucher if they've spent R1,000+ at Spur in the preceding 12 months.
Good to know: Points take up to 72 hours to appear. You must scan the QR code on your bill through the app — waiters won't ask you. If you order through a third-party delivery service, you won't earn points. Always order directly through the Spur website for delivery.
The 3 Moves That Actually Matter
1. Never Leave Without Scanning
This is the single biggest mistake Spur diners make. Unlike grocery loyalty cards where the cashier prompts you, nobody at Spur will remind you to scan. Open the Spur app, scan the QR code on your bill, and your points register within 72 hours. There's no way to add points retroactively. Keep your Spur Family Club card in SuperCards so it's always one tap away when the bill arrives.
2. Order Delivery and Collection Through Spur Directly
If you order Spur for delivery or collection, do it through the Spur website — not through third-party delivery platforms. You earn the same 5% on delivery and collection orders, but only when you order directly. Third-party orders bypass the loyalty system entirely.
3. Register Every Kid for the Secret Tribe
Each child on your profile gets a free kids' meal, soda, and ice cream on their birthday — no minimum spend required. Register them at least 48 hours before their birthday with the correct date of birth. You can add up to 4 children (or more via the call centre). For families with multiple kids, this adds up to real value over the years.
Get Your Points Out (Best → Worst)
R50 meal vouchers — automatically loaded at R1,000 qualifying spend. Use on your next visit. Straightforward, no conversion loss.
Birthday vouchers — R50 for adults (if you meet the R1,000/year spend threshold), free kids' meal for Secret Tribe members. Decent bonus.
You still earn points even when paying with a voucher — see Pro Tips for how to make that compound.
No other redemption options — you can't cash out, convert to gift cards, or transfer points. If you stop going to Spur, your vouchers are worthless.
Watch Out For
- Accounts go dormant after 12 months of inactivity. One visit per year keeps your profile alive. Reactivation requires calling Spur customer care.
- The adult birthday voucher isn't automatic. You need R1,000+ spend in the 12 months before your birthday. If you only go to Spur occasionally, you won't qualify.
- Points are calculated excluding VAT and tip. Your actual return on the total amount you pay is closer to 4.3%, not the advertised 5%.
- Vouchers require a minimum bill. You can only redeem a R50 voucher when your bill totals R50 or more — no partial redemptions or cash back.
When to Skip the Spur Family Club
- You rarely eat at Spur. Under R500/month at Spur, you'll wait 2+ months for a single R50 voucher. The effort of scanning barely pays off.
- You mainly order through third-party delivery services. If you're not ordering directly through Spur, you earn nothing.
- You prefer other Spur Group brands. If you eat at RocoMamas, Panarottis, or John Dory's more often, download their dedicated loyalty apps instead — the Spur Family Club only covers Spur Steak Ranches.
