What Is MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet?
MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet is South Africa's largest community fundraising programme. Swipe your free card at Woolworths, Engen QuickShops, and other partners, and the retailer donates a percentage of your spend -- up to 1% at Woolworths -- to a school, charity, or environmental organisation of your choice. It costs you nothing. Since 1997, the programme has raised over R1 billion for more than 8,000 beneficiaries. The catch: you personally get nothing back. This is pure giving, not cashback.
When Is MySchool Worth It?
Without effort: Spend R3,000/month at Woolworths with a linked card --> your chosen cause receives roughly R360/year
With the 3 moves: Swipe consistently at all partners, get your household involved, and make sure you've transitioned to MyDifference --> R500--800/year to your beneficiaries
Recent changes: Woolworths launched MyDifference in July 2025, merging WRewards and MySchool into one programme. Your old MySchool and WRewards cards stop working on 1 April 2026. You must switch to MyDifference through Woolworths before then -- and critically, you need to re-select your beneficiaries under "My Causes," because all previous selections were reset during the migration.
How It Works
Where it works: Woolworths (all departments), Country Road, Trenery, Witchery, selected WCafés, and NOW NOW -- the Woolworths Group brands now confirmed under MyDifference. Legacy MySchool partners (Engen QuickShops and Foodstops, Loot.co.za, Bidvest Waltons, Flight Centre, WorksheetCloud) still appear on myschool.co.za but are no longer featured in MyDifference marketing -- check before relying on them.
What you give: Woolworths donates up to 1% of your purchase value to your chosen cause. Other partners donate 0.25%--5%, depending on the retailer.
How it reaches your cause: Beneficiaries receive quarterly payouts. You can track contributions on the Woolworths website.
What it costs: Free. Always has been.
How to sign up: Register for MyDifference on the Woolworths website -- it takes 2 minutes. Select up to 3 causes under "My Causes." You'll get a virtual card immediately. Physical cards are still available in-store on request. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Good to know: At Woolworths, donations are automatic if your card is linked -- no separate swipe needed. At other partners like Engen QuickShops, you still need to present your card. For online shopping at Loot.co.za, enter your card number at checkout. If you forget to swipe, the donation is lost -- there's no retroactive credit.
The 3 Moves That Actually Matter
1. Link Your Card and Never Miss a Swipe
If your Woolworths store card, credit card, or MyDifference card is linked to your profile, every Woolworths transaction automatically generates a donation. No fumbling for a second card, no forgetting at the till. Keep your card in SuperCards so it's always one tap away -- especially useful at non-Woolworths partners where you still need to present it separately.
2. Swipe at Every Partner, Not Just Woolworths
Most supporters only swipe at Woolworths and miss the other partners entirely. Filling up? Swipe at the Engen QuickShop (not fuel, but anything in the convenience store counts). Buying office supplies? Bidvest Waltons. Booking a holiday? Flight Centre. Shopping online? Enter your card number at Loot.co.za. These add up -- some partners donate more than Woolworths' 1%.
3. Transition to MyDifference Before 1 April 2026
This is urgent. Your old MySchool card stops working on 1 April 2026. Register for MyDifference on the Woolworths website, then re-select your causes under "My Causes" by 30 June 2026. If you don't, your swipes stop generating donations entirely. Many supporters haven't done this yet -- don't be one of them.
Get Your Donations Out (Best --> Worst)
Automatic quarterly payouts -- your beneficiary receives the accumulated donations without you doing anything. The system handles it.
Multi-cause support -- split donations across up to 3 beneficiaries (school + charity + environmental cause). Donations are divided equally.
There are ways to multiply your impact beyond a single card -- see Pro Tips below.
Not swiping at all -- surprisingly common. If you carry the card but never present it, the programme generates zero. Link it, or keep it accessible on your phone.
Watch Out For
- Old cards expire 1 April 2026. If you haven't switched to MyDifference, your swipes do nothing.
- Beneficiary selections were wiped. During the MyDifference transition, all previous cause selections were reset. Check your Woolworths account to confirm your causes are still active.
- Engen: convenience store only. Your MySchool card doesn't work on fuel purchases -- only on items bought inside the QuickShop or Foodstop.
- Legacy non-Woolworths partners: unconfirmed under MyDifference. Sister-brand integration with Country Road, Trenery, Witchery, WCafés, and NOW NOW is confirmed. But Engen QuickShops, Loot.co.za, Bidvest Waltons, Flight Centre, and WorksheetCloud are absent from May 2026 MyDifference marketing -- partner pages remain on myschool.co.za, but ask in-store before assuming a swipe still counts.
When to Skip MySchool
- If you want personal rewards. MySchool gives you nothing personally -- the entire value goes to your beneficiary. If personal cashback is your priority, other SA loyalty programmes offer that directly.
- If you rarely shop at partner stores. Spending under R1,000/month at Woolworths means your beneficiary receives less than R120/year. Still free, but barely noticeable.
- If you can't be bothered to swipe. An inactive card is a dead card. If you won't link it or remember to scan it, there's no point carrying it.
