What Is SPAR Rewards?
SPAR Rewards is a free loyalty card that unlocks member-exclusive pricing on hundreds of products across SPAR, SuperSPAR, KWIKSPAR, and TOPS at SPAR stores nationwide. Swipe your card at the till and you automatically pay less on marked items — no points to track, no thresholds to hit. The savings are instant but variable: how much you actually pocket depends on which products in your basket happen to carry Rewards pricing that month.
When Is SPAR Rewards Worth It?
Without effort: Swipe on every shop at R3,000/month grocery spend, conservatively save R360–R600/year on member-priced items.
With the 3 moves: Actively check monthly specials and time bigger purchases around promotions — realistically R800–R1,200/year.
Recent changes: SPAR launched its R1 Billion in Savings campaign in early 2025 with significantly expanded member pricing. SPAR Mobile (an MVNO on MTN's network) launched in May 2025, letting you earn free data from grocery shopping. A major bank rewards programme added SPAR as a partner in early 2024 (details in Pro Tips).
How It Works
Where it works: All SPAR, SuperSPAR, KWIKSPAR, SPAR Express, SaveMor, and TOPS at SPAR stores across South Africa — over 850 locations. Does NOT work with SPAR2U delivery orders.
What you earn: Instant discounts on selected products marked with SPAR Rewards pricing. No points, no accumulation — just a lower price at the till.
How you get it back: Savings are applied automatically to your till slip when you swipe. Nothing to redeem later.
What it costs: Free. Always has been.
How to sign up: Get a card at any SPAR store, then activate via WhatsApp (message "Hi" to 0860 313 141), USSD, or QR code. Takes two minutes. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Member perks: Automatic entry into SPAR competitions — Win A Car (60 cars annually) and Grand Cash Giveaway (R5 million in instant till prizes). Three months' free access to online courses through an education partner.
Good to know: Some SPAR stores also run their own separate store-specific loyalty points programme (via MyLoyaltyKard) — that's a different system from the national SPAR Rewards card. The store points only work at one specific store. If your store runs both, you can use both. Also, if you forget your physical card, use your cellphone number at the till to access your virtual card.
The 3 Moves That Actually Matter
1. Never Shop Without Swiping
This sounds obvious, but it's the entire programme. SPAR Rewards isn't a points system where missing one scan costs you a few cents — you literally pay a higher price on every member-priced product if you forget. Keep your card in SuperCards so it's always one tap away, or use your cellphone number at the till as backup.
2. Check the Monthly Specials Before Big Shops
SPAR rotates its Rewards-priced products monthly. Before a larger grocery run, check the current SPAR Rewards specials on the website to see what's discounted. If an item you'd buy anyway has member pricing this month, stock up. This turns passive 3–5% savings on random items into deliberate 10–20% savings on items you specifically targeted.
3. Time Purchases Around Major Campaigns
SPAR periodically runs large-scale promotions (like the R1 Billion in Savings campaign) where member pricing gets significantly more aggressive across more product categories. During these windows, the number of Rewards-priced items can double. A big household restock during one of these campaigns stretches your rand noticeably further.
Get Your Savings (Best to Worst)
Swipe for instant member pricing — the only way to access savings. Simple, automatic, no minimum spend.
Competition entries — automatic when you swipe and buy qualifying products. Win A Car and Grand Cash Giveaway are genuine (60 cars, R5 million in prizes). No extra effort needed.
There's a way to stack additional rewards on top of your SPAR Rewards savings — see Pro Tips below.
Ignoring your card at the till — you're paying full price on every member-discounted item. There's no way to claim the savings retroactively.
Watch Out For
- No delivery integration. SPAR Rewards does not work with SPAR2U or other delivery apps. You must shop in-store to benefit.
- Savings are unpredictable. Your actual discount depends on which products happen to carry Rewards pricing that month. Some months your usual basket hits plenty of deals; others, almost none.
- Scam alert. Fake SPAR competitions circulate regularly on WhatsApp and Facebook. Legitimate SPAR competitions only run through spar.co.za — ignore everything else.
When to Skip SPAR Rewards
- If Checkers is your main store. Checkers Xtra Savings offers a similar instant-discount model with better app integration, delivery support via Sixty60, and an optional paid tier. It's the stronger programme.
- If you mostly order groceries online. SPAR Rewards is in-store only. Pick n Pay Smart Shopper and Checkers Xtra Savings both work with their respective delivery apps.
- If you spend under R1,000/month at SPAR. Your annual savings would be under R50. The card costs nothing, but it's not worth changing your shopping habits for.
