What Is Xtra Savings?
Xtra Savings is South Africa's largest rewards programme — swipe your free card at Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, or LiquorShop and get instant discounts on selected products at the till. No points, no tiers, no complexity: member-exclusive prices apply automatically when you scan. With 33.7 million members and R16.5 billion saved collectively last financial year, it is genuinely mass-market — but individual savings are modest unless you shop strategically.
When Is Xtra Savings Worth It?
Without effort: Swipe your card on every grocery shop, buy whatever you normally would. Realistic savings: R40–R80/month (R500–R1,000/year) depending on how many Xtra Savings-marked products you happen to pick up.
With the 3 moves: Check deals before you shop, time bigger purchases around promotions, and link your card to Sixty60 for online specials. Realistic savings: R100–R250/month (R1,200–R3,000/year).
Recent changes: FNB eBucks dropped Shoprite and Checkers in March 2025. Standard Bank UCount Rewards stepped in from April 2025, offering up to 30% back in-store and 40% back on Sixty60 when you pay with a qualifying Standard Bank card — on top of Xtra Savings discounts. Absa Rewards followed in August 2025 with up to 30% cashback. Discovery Vitality members can earn up to 75% back in Discovery Miles on HealthyFood items at Checkers since September 2024.
How It Works
Where it works: Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, Usave, LiquorShop, Petshop Science — plus Checkers Sixty60 and Shoprite Sixty60 for delivery.
What you save: Instant member-exclusive discounts of up to 40% off on selected products. No fixed percentage on everything — savings depend entirely on which products carry Xtra Savings deals that week.
How you get it: Automatic. Swipe your card at the till and discounts apply instantly. Your till slip shows exactly what you saved.
What it costs: Free. The optional Xtra Savings Plus subscription (R99/month) adds unlimited Sixty60 deliveries, 10% extra in-store discount (capped at R200/month), and double the personalised offers.
How to sign up: Grab a card at any till point or Money Market counter. Register in under 60 seconds via WhatsApp (087 240 5709), USSD, or the website. Card is usable immediately. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Member perks: Free monthly funeral grocery benefit worth R4,500 (requires 4 qualifying swipes per month — details below). R1 back every time you shop with a Planet Bag. Personalised deals that improve over time based on your shopping habits.
Good to know: Xtra Savings is not a points programme. There is nothing to accumulate, nothing to redeem, nothing that expires. Discounts happen at the till or they do not. If you forget to swipe, you miss the deal — no retroactive credits. Keep your card in SuperCards so it is always one tap away.
The 3 Moves That Actually Matter
1. Check the Deals Before You Shop
Open your personalised deals via WhatsApp (087 240 5709) or the Shoprite website before heading to the store. Xtra Savings builds a profile based on your shopping habits, so your deals become more relevant over time. Scan the current leaflet for deep discounts you can plan your meals around. This is where the programme shifts from "nice to have" to genuinely useful — a few minutes of planning can turn a R50 monthly saving into R150+.
2. Never Forget to Swipe
The single most common mistake is leaving your card at home. No swipe, no savings — and there are no retroactive adjustments. If you forget the physical card, WhatsApp 087 240 5709 and type "My Xtra Savings Card" to pull up a digital version at the till. Even better: add it to SuperCards so your card is always ready when your phone is in your pocket.
3. Link Your Card to Sixty60
If you ever order groceries via Checkers Sixty60 or Shoprite Sixty60, link your Xtra Savings card under "My Profile" in your Sixty60 account. Xtra Savings deals apply to delivery orders too — but only if your card is linked. Many members miss this because they think Xtra Savings is in-store only. During Xtra Xtra Weekend events, Sixty60 offers up to 60% off on selected items.
How You Save (Best to Least Useful)
Personalised deals on items you actually buy — the programme tracks your habits and tailors offers. The longer you swipe consistently, the better they get. This is where most real value sits.
Weekly Xtra Savings specials — visible on shelf tags and leaflets. Up to 40% off on marked products, applied automatically at the till.
Sixty60 Xtra Xtra Weekend events — periodic deep discounts on delivery orders. Worth checking if you already use the service.
There are ways to stack bank rewards on top of every Xtra Savings discount for significantly more value — see Pro Tips below.
Inflated "was" prices — some Xtra Savings deals advertise large rand savings from reference prices that may already be above market rate. Check unit prices on the shelf tag to compare properly.
Watch Out For
- No swipe = no savings. Discounts cannot be applied after the fact. Always have your card ready — physically or digitally via WhatsApp or SuperCards.
- Funeral benefit requires 4 qualifying swipes per month — on 4 different days, R100+ per swipe. You must opt in. Track your qualifying swipes via WhatsApp (087 240 5709 → Xtra Savings Funeral Benefit).
- WhatsApp is the most reliable channel for pulling up your card and current deals if any digital channel hiccups.
- Xtra Savings Plus only pays off if you use Sixty60 regularly. At R99/month, you need at least 3 deliveries per month to break even on the delivery fee savings alone. The 10% in-store discount is capped at R200 — decent, but not transformative.
When to Skip Xtra Savings
- You already shop almost exclusively at Pick n Pay, Woolworths, or Spar. Each has its own loyalty programme. Xtra Savings only works within the Shoprite Group ecosystem — there are no external partners.
- You want a points programme with guaranteed return on every rand. Xtra Savings offers discounts on selected items, not a fixed percentage back on total spend. If you want predictable cashback, a bank rewards programme may suit you better.
- Your grocery spend is under R1,000/month at Shoprite or Checkers. Your actual savings will likely be under R30/month — still better than nothing for a free card, but not worth changing your shopping habits for.
