What Is Smart Shopper?
Smart Shopper is Pick n Pay's free loyalty programme — swipe your card at the till and earn points on every shop, in-store, online, or via on-demand delivery. You can spend those points on groceries, airtime, data, or even utility bills. The base earn rate is a modest 0.5% back, but the real value sits in personalised discounts and free Club bonuses that can push savings meaningfully higher.
When Is Smart Shopper Worth It?
Without effort: R3,000/month at Pick n Pay, just scan your card → ~R180/year in points
With the 3 moves: Join Clubs, activate personalised discounts, play Smart Hopper → realistically R500–R800/year in combined points and instant savings
Recent changes: Pick n Pay merged its asap! delivery service and Smart Shopper into a single digital experience in late 2023. Pick n Pay Clothing was added in March 2026. The GoTyme/TymeBank double-points benefit at Pick n Pay ended on 31 March 2026, and GoTyme kiosks were pulled from PnP stores on the same date.
How It Works
Where it works: All Pick n Pay stores (supermarkets, Express, Liquor, Clothing, Home), BP fuel stations, Europcar, Netflorist, Planet Fitness.
What you earn: 1 point per R2 spent at Pick n Pay. At BP: 10 points per litre of fuel.
How you get it back: 100 points = R1. Spend at the till, online, on airtime/data, or on bill payments. All at the same rate.
What it costs: Free. Always has been.
How to sign up: Register on the Pick n Pay website in 2 minutes and get a digital card instantly. Physical cards also available in-store. You can even sign up via WhatsApp. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Member perks: Join free Clubs (Wine, Coffee, Baby, Pet, Live Well) for 3x points on thousands of category products — turning 0.5% into 1.5% on those items. Club members also get exclusive event invites and discounts.
Good to know: You receive 3 personalised cash-off discounts every Thursday, based on your shopping history. Points appear immediately on your till slip in-store. If you forget to scan, points can't be added retroactively — keep your card in SuperCards so it's always ready.
The 3 Moves That Actually Matter
1. Join every free Club — instant 3x points
Open the Pick n Pay website, go to Clubs, and join all five (Wine, Coffee, Baby, Pet, Live Well). Each gives you triple points on all products in that category. Even if you only occasionally buy coffee beans or pet food, the 3x multiplier turns 0.5% into 1.5% on those items with zero ongoing effort.
2. Check your Thursday discounts before you shop
Every Thursday, you get 3 personalised instant cash-off deals based on what you actually buy. These are often R5–R20 off specific products. Check them on the Pick n Pay website before heading to the store, and plan your shop around what's discounted. Over a year, this adds up to R500+ in savings — significantly more than points alone.
3. Play Smart Hopper for free bonus vouchers
The Smart Hopper mini-game takes 2 minutes and unlocks daily bonus vouchers — 5x points on select products, cash-off deals, and BP fuel bonuses. It resets every Monday, so regular players can stack up to 7 vouchers per week. Most members don't know this exists.
Get Your Points Out (Best to Worst)
Spend at the till — 100 points = R1 off your groceries. Simple, full value, no minimum.
Pay bills or buy airtime/data — same rate, done through your Smart Shopper account. Especially useful if points are about to expire.
There are ways to stretch your points further than 0.5% — see Pro Tips below.
Letting points sit — R250m+ in Smart Shopper points go unclaimed every year. With a 12-month expiry, unused points simply vanish.
Watch Out For
- Points expire after 12 months from the month earned, on a rolling basis. No activity-based reset — each batch has its own clock.
- Forgetting to scan is irreversible. Points cannot be credited retroactively. Store your card digitally so you never miss a swipe.
- The Store Account is a credit facility, not a savings tool. It charges 21% interest if you don't pay in full monthly. The double points do not offset interest costs.
- 0.5% base rate is half what it was. Pick n Pay cut the earn rate from 1% to 0.5% in 2017. The personalised discounts are meant to compensate, but you have to actively use them.
When to Skip Smart Shopper
- If you mainly shop at Checkers: Xtra Savings offers instant discounts of up to 25% on selected items — no points to track, no expiry to worry about. For most shoppers, the instant savings model delivers more noticeable value.
- If you spend under R1,000/month at Pick n Pay: Your annual points return would be under R60. The personalised discounts help, but other programmes may reward you more.
- If you don't engage with the programme: Smart Shopper's real value comes from Clubs, personalised discounts, and Smart Hopper — all of which require at least occasional engagement. Scan-and-forget yields only 0.5%.
