What Is Builders+?
Builders+ is the free loyalty programme at Builders — South Africa's largest DIY and building materials chain, with 100+ stores nationwide. There are no points to collect or redeem. Instead, you get personalised deals, a 15% welcome discount, a 10% birthday discount, and early access to promotions. The value is front-loaded: that welcome discount alone can save you up to R1,500 on your first online order.
When Is Builders+ Worth It?
Without effort: Sign up, use the 15% welcome discount on a big order, collect the birthday discount once a year. Realistic one-off saving: R500–R1,500, then R200–R500/year ongoing.
With the 3 moves: Time your sign-up around a major purchase, use online-only deals, and stack the birthday discount on a planned project. Realistic: R1,500+ first year, then R500–R1,000/year ongoing.
Recent changes: Walmart opened its first South African stores in late 2025, but Builders continues operating as a separate brand with no changes to the loyalty programme.
How It Works
Where it works: All Builders stores — Warehouse, Express, Trade Depot, and Superstore formats — plus builders.co.za for online shopping.
What you earn: No points. You get personalised deals based on your purchase history, plus fixed discounts (welcome, birthday, pensioner).
How you get it back: Discounts apply at checkout — online or in-store depending on the offer. No redemption step needed.
What it costs: Free. Always has been.
How to sign up: Online at builders.co.za/builders+ or at any Builders store. Takes a few minutes. Existing Builders cardholders were automatically enrolled. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Member perks: 15% once-off welcome discount (online only, max R1,500). 10% birthday discount (online only, valid 30 days). Pensioners over 60 get 10% off on Wednesdays (in-store, selected products, must show ID). Early access to promotions. Automatic digital receipts linked to your card.
Good to know: The welcome and birthday discounts are online-only — you cannot use them in-store. Use click-and-collect if you want to avoid delivery issues. Make sure your date of birth is updated on the Builders website, otherwise the birthday discount won't activate.
The 3 Moves That Actually Matter
1. Time Your Sign-Up Around a Big Purchase
The 15% welcome discount (max R1,500 off) is the single most valuable perk in the entire programme, and you only get it once. Don't waste it on a R200 order — sign up when you have a R5,000–R10,000 project purchase lined up. At R10,000, you'll pocket the full R1,500. That's better than any points programme could offer on a single transaction.
2. Always Check Online-Only Deals Before Buying In-Store
Builders runs a dedicated online-only deals section with discounts not available in-store. Before driving to the shop, check builders.co.za for the item you need. Between online-exclusive pricing and the option to click-and-collect, you might save 10–20% on individual items without waiting for delivery.
3. Use Your Birthday Discount on a Planned Purchase
The 10% birthday discount is valid for 30 days in your birthday month — online only. That's a meaningful saving on a R3,000–R5,000 order (R300–R500 off). Don't let it expire unused. If you have a home project in mind, schedule the purchase for your birthday month. Store your Builders+ card in SuperCards so you don't forget you have it when the month rolls around.
Get Your Savings (Best to Worst)
15% welcome discount — Best single-use deal. Plan a large online purchase, save up to R1,500.
Birthday 10% discount — Solid annual perk. Worth R300–R500 on a decent-sized order.
Personalised Builders+ deals — Variable value, but worth checking before any purchase. No effort required beyond being a member.
There's a way to earn actual cashback on every Builders purchase — see Pro Tips below.
Monthly competition entries — Lottery odds. Not a reason to engage with the programme.
Watch Out For
- Welcome and birthday discounts are online-only. You cannot use them at the till. Plan for click-and-collect to avoid delivery headaches.
- Pensioner discount is at the manager's discretion. The 10% applies to "certain products" that vary by branch — it's not a blanket discount on your entire basket.
- Online delivery has a poor reputation. Trustpilot reviews (2.2/5) cite non-delivery, long delays, and difficult refunds. Click-and-collect is the safer option for online orders.
- The Builders Store Card is a credit product, not a loyalty card. Don't confuse it with the free Builders+ membership. It carries interest on unpaid balances.
When to Skip Builders+
- If you're only buying basic building materials (cement, bricks, sand): Cashbuild often has lower prices on these staples, with 250+ stores across the country.
- If you rarely shop at Builders: Without regular purchases, the personalised deals have limited value. The birthday discount alone isn't worth signing up if you don't shop here.
- If you want actual points or cashback: Builders+ doesn't offer percentage-back on spending. For ongoing cashback, you'd need the Store Card (a credit product) — which is a different conversation entirely.
