What Is the Freedom Fuels Discount Card?
Freedom Fuels is an independent fuel retailer with around 35 stations across South East Queensland and northern NSW. Their free discount card takes 6c/L off standard fuel and 8c/L off premium at the pump, plus 5% off in-store purchases -- no points, no app, just an instant discount when you scan your barcode. The base saving is a solid 3-4% on fuel, and periodic 13c/L promotional events push that above 7% for a few days each month.
When Is the Freedom Fuels Discount Card Worth It?
Without effort: Fill up regularly at your local Freedom Fuels, scan your card each time, spend ~$200/month on fuel --> roughly $80/year saved
With the 3 moves: Time fills around 13c/L promo weeks, always price-compare --> realistically $100-130/year
Recent changes: Freedom Fuels continued running 13c/L promotional events roughly every 4-8 weeks through 2025 and into January 2026. The company shifted its Brisbane bulk supply model in early 2026, moving to third-party terminals -- no impact on retail pricing or the discount card.
How It Works
Where it works: ~35 Freedom Fuels stations, mostly in SE Queensland (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Ipswich) plus a handful in northern NSW. Not all stations participate in the discount program -- check the participating sites list on the Freedom Fuels website.
What you save: 6c/L off E10, ULP91 and diesel. 8c/L off PULP 95 and PULP 98. Without any card, you still get 4c/L off when buying 40+ litres.
How you get it: Discount applied automatically at the register when you scan your barcode before paying. Nothing to collect or redeem later.
What it costs: Free.
How to sign up: Register through an affiliated organisation -- Union Shopper, CMCA, or a participating club (Kedron-Wavell, The Lion Richlands, City Golf Club, and others). You get a virtual barcode via email that you can print or store in SuperCards so it's always one tap away. The Family & Friends card is also available but may require a referral code.
Member perks: 5% off convenience store and Grinding Time cafe purchases (excludes tobacco, telco items, prepaid cards, and third-party products). Cardholders also receive exclusive promotional offers via SMS or email.
Good to know: You cannot stack the discount card with supermarket fuel dockets -- it's one or the other. Since the card gives 6-8c/L vs the docket's 4c/L, the card always wins for fuel. Save your dockets for other stations. LPG is excluded from all discounts. Maximum 120 litres per transaction per day.
The 3 Moves That Actually Matter
1. Always Compare Prices Before Filling Up
Freedom Fuels' base pump prices vary by location and timing. During Brisbane's price cycle peaks, some stations run 20-40c/L above nearby competitors -- no discount card bridges that gap. Before every fill, spend 10 seconds checking a fuel price comparison website to verify your nearest Freedom Fuels is actually competitive after the discount. When it is, the 6-8c/L off is genuinely good value. When it's not, fill elsewhere.
2. Time Your Big Fills Around 13c/L Promo Events
Freedom Fuels runs promotional events roughly every 4-8 weeks -- typically Tuesday to Friday -- offering 13c/L off all fuel grades plus 5% off shop purchases. That's over double the everyday card discount. If you can plan your fill-ups around these windows, the savings add up: 13c/L on a 60L fill saves $7.80 versus the normal $3.60. You'll get a text or email notification if you're registered -- act quickly since the window is only 3-4 days.
3. Use the Card for Every Fill, Regardless of Volume
Without the card, you need to fill 40+ litres to trigger the automatic 4c/L discount. With the card, there's no minimum volume -- even a $20 top-up gets the full 6-8c/L off. If you fill up frequently in smaller amounts (motorcycles, small tanks, topping up before a trip), the card pays off more than you'd expect compared to the no-card baseline.
Get Your Savings (Best to Worst)
Scan card at register -- instant 6-8c/L off. No points to track, no redemption steps.
13c/L promotional events -- same scan, bigger discount. Watch for SMS/email alerts every 4-8 weeks.
There's a way to layer additional savings on top of the card discount -- see Pro Tips below.
Skipping the card on a 40+L fill -- you still get 4c/L off automatically, but you're leaving 2-4c/L on the table. Add your barcode to SuperCards so you never forget.
Watch Out For
- Base prices can be higher than competitors. The discount looks great on paper, but check a fuel price comparison tool first. A station 2km away at 15c/L cheaper beats your 6c/L card discount every time.
- Cannot combine with supermarket dockets. You can use dockets at Freedom Fuels instead of the discount card, but not both together. The card gives better value on fuel.
- 13c/L promos often coincide with price cycle peaks. Community reports consistently flag this pattern. Verify the post-discount price is genuinely competitive before filling up during a promo.
- Some stations don't participate. Check the outlet locator on the Freedom Fuels website before assuming your local station accepts the discount card.
When to Skip Freedom Fuels
- If you don't live in SE Queensland. With only ~35 stations, nearly all in QLD, this program is irrelevant outside the region.
- If a cheaper station is nearby. Costco and major chains can be 10-30c/L cheaper than Freedom Fuels at cycle peaks. The discount card cannot overcome a large base price gap.
- If you only buy LPG. All discount offers exclude LPG Autogas.
