What Is Qantas Frequent Flyer?

Qantas Frequent Flyer is Australia's largest rewards program — carry your loyalty card and earn points when you fly Qantas, Jetstar, and partner airlines, plus when you shop at Woolworths, book hotels, rent cars, and spend with over 450 online retailers. You redeem points for flights (the best value), upgrades, hotels, or gift cards. This rewards card costs nothing to join, and the base earning rate from everyday spending is modest, but if you fly regularly or use the Qantas Shopping portal strategically, the points add up to genuine value — especially when redeemed for business or premium economy flights.

Is Qantas Frequent Flyer Worth It?

Without effort: Fly Sydney-Melbourne return economy twice a year + $200/month at Woolworths → ~3,600 points/year → value around $72 when redeemed for economy flights

With the 3 moves: Add Qantas Shopping for online purchases, pool points with family, and book Classic Flight Rewards well ahead → realistically $200-400/year for regular flyers or $100-150 for ground-only earners

Recent changes: August 2025 saw a significant devaluation — Classic Flight Rewards increased 15-20% (premium cabins hit hardest). February 2026 brought the program's biggest overhaul ever: from late 2026, you can earn up to 140 Status Credits per year from ground spending (credit cards, retail, utilities), roll over up to 50% of unused Status Credits to the next year, and a new reward search tool will scan availability across Qantas and dozens of partners in one view. Points Club and Green Tier are being phased out from late 2026.

How Does Qantas Frequent Flyer Work?

Where it works: Qantas and Jetstar flights, oneworld airlines (American, British Airways, Cathay Pacific), Emirates, Woolworths (via Everyday Rewards), 450+ online retailers through Qantas Shopping, hotels (Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, Accor, Airbnb), car rentals (Avis, Budget), Ampol fuel stations, Qantas Wine, and various insurance/utility partners.

What you earn: Varies dramatically by activity. Flights earn roughly 1 point per mile in economy (more in premium cabins and higher status tiers). Woolworths earns 1 Everyday Rewards point per $1, which converts to 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 automatically when you reach 2,000 Everyday Rewards points. Qantas Shopping earns 3 points per $1 on average (up to 10+ during promotions). Credit cards earn 0.5-1.5 points per $1 depending on the card.

How you get it back: Redeem points for Classic Flight Rewards (fixed points for specific flights — best value), upgrades, Points Plus Pay (mix points and cash for any flight — poor value), hotels, car rentals, Qantas Store products, or gift cards.

What it costs: Usually free to join (officially $99.50 but easily bypassed — see below).

How to sign up: Fastest method is online at qantas.com — takes 2 minutes, digital membership available immediately, physical card mailed later. Join free via Woolworths Everyday Rewards, credit card sign-ups, or promotional codes. Add your digital card to SuperCards so you always have your membership ready to scan.

Member perks: Birthday bonus points annually. Status tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum, Platinum One) unlock lounge access, priority boarding, extra baggage, and preferred seating. From early 2027, Silver members get an extra lounge invitation each year, and all higher tiers receive new on-the-ground vouchers and discounts.

Good to know: Points expire after 18 months of no earning or redemption activity (but any single transaction resets the clock). Online earning through Qantas Shopping requires clicking through from the Qantas portal first — most retailers won't credit points if you go directly. Points from in-store purchases post within a few days; online purchases take a few weeks (held during return periods). Classic Flight Rewards open 353 days ahead — book early for best availability, which is notoriously limited.

How to Get the Most From Qantas Frequent Flyer

If you buy groceries at Woolworths anyway, link your Everyday Rewards account to Qantas Frequent Flyer. Every 2,000 Everyday Rewards points converts automatically to 1,000 Qantas Points (effective 0.5 points per $1). This is passive — no coupons to activate, just link once and forget.

2. Use Qantas Shopping for online purchases

Before buying anything online, check if the retailer is in the Qantas Shopping portal (450+ partners including THE ICONIC, eBay, Adore Beauty). Standard earn is 3 points per $1, and promotions regularly push this to 7-10 points. Must click through from the Qantas Shopping website first — direct purchases won't track.

3. Book Classic Flight Rewards 353 days ahead

Classic Flight Rewards are the best redemption value by far (2-8 cents per point vs 0.5 cents for Points Plus Pay). They open 353 days before departure, and availability disappears fast — especially for popular routes and premium cabins. If you're planning travel, set a calendar reminder for 353 days out and book then. Tuesdays and Wednesdays show better availability than Fridays and Sundays. If you can't find Classic availability, check partner airlines (Japan Airlines often requires 30% fewer points than Qantas for the same route).

How to Redeem Qantas Frequent Flyer Points

Upgrades to business or premium economy — 5-10 cents per point if upgrading from a paid ticket on flexible fares

Classic Flight Rewards in business or premium economy — 3-8 cents per point (international long-haul), 5 cents per point (premium economy)

Classic Flight Rewards in economy — 2 cents per point, solid baseline value

Classic Plus Flight Rewards — more availability than Classic but higher points cost; value drops when cash fares are high

There's a way to consistently beat these values if you fly premium cabins and know which partner airlines to book — see Pro Tips below.

Hotels and car rentals — 0.7 cents per point, far below flight value

Points Plus Pay flights — 0.5 cents per point, terrible value; only use if no Classic availability and you must fly specific dates

Qantas Store products and gift cards — 0.4 cents per point (Auto Rewards gift cards slightly better at 0.67 cents per point), almost always cheaper to buy with cash

Qantas Frequent Flyer — What to Watch Out For

Key pros and cons to know:

  • Points expire after 18 months with no earning or redemption activity. Any single transaction resets the clock — even spending $1 via Qantas Shopping counts. Qantas sends warnings at 12 months and again before expiry. If points expire, you may qualify for the Qantas Points Challenge (earn 2,500 points from 2+ sources within 3 months to restore them), but only within 6 months of expiry.
  • Classic Reward availability is genuinely scarce. This is the most common complaint across forums and reviews. When seats do appear, they're often terrible schedules with excessive stopovers. Book 353 days ahead or be flexible with dates/routes.
  • August 2025 devaluation hit hard. Premium cabin redemptions increased 15-20%. If you're holding points for future use, their value just dropped significantly.
  • Don't click through from external sites when using Qantas Shopping. Points only track if you start from the Qantas Shopping portal. The browser extension helps with this.
  • Points Plus Pay is a trap. At 0.5 cents per point, you're getting one-quarter the value of Classic Flight Rewards. Qantas advertises it heavily because it's profitable for them, not you.

When to Skip Qantas Frequent Flyer

  • If you rarely fly and don't shop at Woolworths or use Qantas Shopping. Your earning will be minimal — under 2,000 points per year isn't worth tracking.
  • If you value certainty over optimisation. Classic Reward availability is frustrating, and redemptions require planning 11+ months ahead. If you want guaranteed value without effort, cashback portals often deliver better returns on online shopping.
  • If Velocity (Virgin Australia) fits your travel patterns better. Velocity has better reward seat availability to the USA, Asia, and Middle East, easier/cheaper status earning, and 24-month point expiry (vs 18 months for Qantas). Qantas wins on network size and international partnerships; Velocity wins on redemption availability and value transparency.
