What Is Flybuys?
Flybuys is Australia's largest rewards program and loyalty card — scan your free rewards card at Coles, Bunnings, Kmart and 20+ other partners to earn points on everyday shopping. You can redeem points for cash off your next shop, transfer them to Velocity Frequent Flyer for flights, or convert to gift cards. The baseline return is modest (0.5% back), but with a few deliberate moves you can turn that into a genuinely useful return each year.
Is Flybuys Worth It?
Without effort: $300/month at Coles and partners → 3,600 points/year → $18/year
With the 3 moves: Activate all offers and complete one 4-week challenge → realistically $80–150/year
Recent changes: Flybuys Travel closed in October 2025 — you can no longer book holidays through Flybuys, but Velocity transfers remain available. Active membership grew 4.4% in 2025, and bonus offers continue to drive most of the value.
How Does Flybuys Work?
Where it works: Coles, Bunnings, Kmart, Target, Officeworks, Coles Express, Liquorland, Catch.com.au, mycar, and 20+ other partners
What you earn: 1 point per $1 spent at most partners
How you get it back: Redeem points — 2,000 points for $10 off at checkout, or transfer to Velocity Frequent Flyer at 1,000 Flybuys = 500 Velocity Points
What it costs: Free. Paid option (Flybuys Max) is $10/month or $99/year for 5% off fresh produce, free delivery over $50, and streaming access — only worth it if you spend $200+/month on fresh produce alone.
How to sign up: Register on the Flybuys website or app in about 2 minutes. Digital card available immediately, physical card arrives by post. Add your digital card to SuperCards via screenshot after registration so it's always one tap away.
Good to know: Points appear within a few days for in-store shopping, a few weeks for online (held during the return period). Bonus points from offers can take 4+ weeks. If you forget to scan at Coles, you can return to the same store within 7 days with your receipt and card to claim base points. Bunnings won't add points retroactively. For online shopping, enter your 16-digit member number at checkout — no click-through or browser extension required.
How to Get the Most From Flybuys
1. Activate every offer and forget about it
Open the Flybuys website or app, go to the Collect tab (app) or Offers section (website), and activate every offer for stores you even occasionally shop at. Takes 2 minutes. If you buy something that matches an activated offer, the 5x–20x bonus points apply automatically. If not, the offer just expires with no penalty. This is how you turn 0.5% into 2.5–10% on matching purchases, without ongoing effort.
2. Complete one 4-week challenge per quarter
Coles regularly offers 10,000 bonus points (worth $50) when you spend a target amount each week for 4 consecutive weeks. Your target is personalised — typically $50–130/week depending on your usual spending. If you're already shopping at Coles anyway, plan your trips to hit the target. Four successful challenges per year = $200 extra. Don't chase higher targets by overspending — the algorithm will just increase your threshold next time.
3. Redeem for cash off at checkout, not the Rewards Store
Use your points for $10 off at the Coles, Kmart, or Bunnings checkout (2,000 points minimum). This gets you the standard 0.5 cents per point with zero complications. The Flybuys Rewards Store products are almost always cheaper to buy in regular shops. Save your points, cash them out when they hit 2,000, and you'll get the cleanest value.
How to Redeem Flybuys Points
Transfer to Velocity for flights — 1,000 Flybuys = 500 Velocity Points. If you redeem Velocity Points for Business Class flights, you can get 1–1.5 cents per Flybuys point (double or triple the cash value).
Cash off at checkout — 2,000 points = $10. Simple, instant, and gets you the baseline 0.5 cents per point. Works at Coles, Kmart, Target, Bunnings, Officeworks, Liquorland, Coles Express, and mycar.
Flybuys Dollars — Same 2,000 points = $10 rate, redeemed via the website or app and spent in-store later. Same value as cash off at checkout, just slightly less immediate.
There's a way to squeeze significantly more value from your points if you're willing to watch for Velocity transfer bonus promotions and redeem strategically — see Pro Tips below.
Flybuys Rewards Store products — Almost always cheaper to buy the same item at retail. Poor value.
Movie passes — Approximately 0.1 cents per point, one-fifth of the baseline cash rate. Avoid.
Flybuys — What to Watch Out For
Key pros and cons to know:
- Points expire after 12 months of inactivity. Any earning or redemption resets the clock, so a single shop or transfer keeps them alive. Keep your card in SuperCards so you never forget to scan.
- Bonus points can take 4–6 weeks to appear. If you complete a 4-week challenge, don't expect instant credit — the system is slow. This is normal, but it means you can't rely on bonus points for immediate redemption.
- Spending targets increase if you consistently hit them. The algorithm watches your behaviour. If your 4-week challenge target keeps climbing, ignore offers for a few months or split your shopping across multiple accounts to reset expectations.
- Bunnings won't add missed points. If you forget to scan at Bunnings, those points are gone. Coles and Officeworks allow retroactive claims within 7 days.
When to Skip Flybuys
- You spend under $50/month at Flybuys partners: Your annual return would be under $3. Not worth tracking offers.
- You're a dedicated Woolworths shopper: Everyday Rewards offers nearly identical mechanics but works at Woolworths. If you rarely shop at Coles, Flybuys won't deliver value. (The smart move is to join both and maximise whichever supermarket you use.)
- You want effortless passive cashback: Flybuys requires activating offers and tracking 4-week challenges to extract real value. If you just want to scan and forget, the 0.5% baseline return is underwhelming compared to a simple cashback credit card.
