What Is Flybuys?
Flybuys is Australia's largest loyalty programme — scan your free card at Coles and earn points on your regular grocery shop. It also works at Bunnings, Kmart, Target, Officeworks, and a handful of other partners. Redeem points for cash off at the checkout, transfer to Velocity Frequent Flyer, or convert to gift cards. The base return is a modest 0.5% back, but personalised bonus offers and 4-week challenges can push that significantly higher.
Is Flybuys Worth It?
Without effort: $150/week at Coles, just scan the card → ~$39/year
With the 3 moves: Activate offers, complete 4-week challenges → realistically $100–200/year
Recent changes: Flybuys Travel closed in September 2025 — Velocity transfers are now the only travel redemption path. Coles Plus Saver launched as a budget paid tier ($7/month). AI-driven personalised offers mean more targeted bonuses but also higher challenge targets for big spenders.
How Does Flybuys Work?
Where it works: Coles supermarkets (800+ stores), Liquorland, First Choice Liquor, Coles Express. Plus Flybuys partners: Bunnings, Kmart, Target, Officeworks, Catch.com.au, mycar.
What you earn: 1 point per $1 at Coles. That's 0.5% back at standard redemption.
How you get it back: Cash off at the checkout — 2,000 points = $10. Also available: Velocity transfer, gift cards, or redemption at Kmart, Bunnings, and other partners.
What it costs: Free. Paid tiers available: Coles Plus Saver ($7/month) for 2x points and 10% off one shop per month; Coles Plus ($19/month) for free delivery, 2x points, and 10x points on online liquor.
How to sign up: Register on the Flybuys website in about two minutes. Digital card works immediately; physical card arrives by post. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Member perks: Flybuys Member Pricing gives exclusive discounts (13–33% off) on rotating selected products when you scan your card. No birthday rewards.
Good to know: Online orders earn points automatically once your Flybuys is linked to your Coles account — no click-through required. Base points show up within 24 hours in-store; bonus and challenge points can take 4–6 weeks. If you forget to scan, you can return to the same store within 7 days with your receipt.
How to Get the Most From Flybuys
1. Activate every offer before you shop
Open the Flybuys website, go to your personalised offers, and activate everything for Coles. If a 5x or 10x bonus matches something you were buying anyway, you earn it automatically. If nothing matches, the offer just expires — no downside. This alone turns 0.5% into 2.5–5% on matching purchases. New offers cycle in constantly, so make it a habit before each shop.
2. Complete the 4-week challenges
Flybuys regularly offers 10,000 bonus points ($50) when you meet a personalised spending target at Coles for four consecutive weeks. The minimum is usually $50/week. The key: spend just above your target, not way over. The algorithm watches your spending — overshoot consistently and your next target jumps. Hit four challenges a year and that's $200 in points from a spend you were making anyway.
3. Use the Tell Coles survey for an easy $5/month
Check your Coles receipt for the Tell Coles survey link. Complete the five-minute survey once per calendar month and choose the 1,000 bonus points option ($5 value). Always pick points over the $5-off-$100 discount — points are unconditional. That's $60/year for about an hour of total effort.
How to Redeem Flybuys Points
Cash off at checkout — 2,000 points = $10, instant, no fuss. Works at Coles, Kmart, Bunnings, Target, and other partners.
Velocity Frequent Flyer transfer — 1,000 Flybuys = 500 Velocity Points. Standard value is similar to cash, but Business Class redemptions can stretch to 1–1.5 cents per Flybuys point. Velocity runs occasional bonus transfer promotions too.
There's a way to get well above 0.5 cents per point — see Pro Tips below.
Rewards Store merchandise — almost always more expensive than buying the same product at retail. Skip.
Movie passes — roughly 0.1 cents per point. Terrible value.
Flybuys — What to Watch Out For
- Points expire after 12 months of inactivity. Any earning or redemption transaction resets the clock. If you shop at Coles even occasionally, this shouldn't be an issue. Add your card to SuperCards so you never forget to scan.
- 4-week challenge targets inflate. Consistently overspending your target trains the algorithm to give you harder targets. Keep it tight — aim for just above the minimum.
- Bonus points are slow. Challenge and promotional points can take 4–6 weeks to appear. Don't panic if they're not immediate.
- Online order substitutions can sink a challenge. If out-of-stock items reduce your order total below the weekly target, that week doesn't count.
When to Skip Flybuys (at Coles)
- You mostly shop at Woolworths or Aldi. Flybuys earns nothing there without a Coles credit card. Everyday Rewards is the direct competitor if Woolworths is your main store.
- You spend under $50/month at Coles. Your annual return would be under $3 in base points. Not worth thinking about.
- You want higher cashback rates. Cashback portals sometimes offer 1–2% on Coles online orders, beating the 0.5% base rate. Gift card resellers occasionally sell Coles cards at 5% off, which dwarfs the standard earn.
