What Is myWalgreens?

myWalgreens is Walgreens' free loyalty program covering all ~8,000 US locations. Scan your phone number at checkout to unlock sale prices, clip digital coupons, and earn Walgreens Cash back on everything from toothpaste to flu shots. The base 1% back is underwhelming, but member-only pricing and digital coupons are where the real savings hide — realistically $50–150/year if you shop there regularly.

When Is myWalgreens Worth It?

Without effort: Spend $150/month, just give your phone number at checkout → ~$18/year in Walgreens Cash, plus access to member sale prices that likely save you another $50–100.

With the 3 moves: Clip digital coupons regularly and time bigger purchases around bonus cash offers → realistically $80–200/year in combined Walgreens Cash and coupon savings.

Recent changes: Walgreens is closing ~500 stores in 2025 as part of a larger downsizing. Credit card rewards earned after January 31, 2026 now expire after 24 months instead of 12. Health Goals (earning rewards for walking) was discontinued in 2022.

How It Works

Where it works: All Walgreens and Duane Reade stores in the US, plus walgreens.com. Single-retailer program — no outside partners.

What you earn: 1% Walgreens Cash on all eligible purchases. 5% on Walgreens-branded products (store-brand items labeled Walgreens or Nice!). You also earn 1% on pharmacy out-of-pocket costs in most states.

How you get it back: Walgreens Cash works like store credit — redeem in $1 increments at the register or online. $1 earned = $1 off. Simple.

What it costs: Free. Always has been.

How to sign up: On the website or at any register. You need a name, ZIP code, and phone number. Your phone number is your account at checkout — no card needed. You can save your membership details into SuperCards after registration.

Member perks: The real value is member-only sale prices. Without myWalgreens, you pay full price on most weekly deals, BOGO offers, and promotional pricing. Seniors 55+ get 20% off regular-priced items on the first Tuesday of every month. You also get a 20% off coupon after any vaccination.

Good to know: You cannot redeem Walgreens Cash on prescriptions, alcohol, tobacco, dairy, or gift cards — even though you earn 1% on pharmacy purchases. Rewards from pharmacy are excluded entirely in Arkansas, New Jersey, and New York. If you don't use any Walgreens Cash for 6 months, your entire balance is forfeited.

The 3 Moves That Actually Matter

1. Clip Every Digital Coupon Before You Shop

Open the Walgreens website, go to coupons, and clip everything relevant — including the "bonus cash" offers (spend $X, get $Y Walgreens Cash). They auto-apply when you enter your phone number at checkout. No downside if they don't match your purchase. This alone turns the 1% base into 5–15% on matched items. Look for the personalized "Only for you" coupons too — they tend to be better than the generic ones.

2. Buy Walgreens Brand for 5x the Return

Walgreens-branded products (labeled "Walgreens" or "Nice!") earn 5% Walgreens Cash instead of 1%. For everyday items like pain relievers, vitamins, batteries, and cleaning supplies, the store brand is typically 20–40% cheaper AND earns 5x the rewards. Where the store brand is equivalent, this is an easy win.

3. Never Shop at Regular Price

Walgreens regular prices are noticeably higher than grocery stores and big-box retailers. The entire value proposition depends on buying items on sale, with coupons stacked on top. Check the weekly ad before shopping and plan around the BOGO and bonus cash deals. If nothing you need is on sale, wait — it will be soon.

Get Your Rewards Out (Best → Worst)

Use at the register — $1 Walgreens Cash = $1 off. Apply it to any non-excluded purchase. Clean, simple, full value.

Use online at walgreens.com — Same 1:1 value, deducted after items ship.

Donate to charity — Available through your account. No personal monetary value, but a real option if you want to give.

There are ways to stretch your Walgreens Cash further by timing redemptions around specific promotions — see Pro Tips below.

Letting it expire — The default outcome if you forget. Walgreens Cash expires 12 months after earning, and your entire balance vanishes if you don't redeem anything for 6 months.

Watch Out For

  • The 6-month inactivity trap. If you don't USE Walgreens Cash in a transaction for 6 months, all of it — including recently earned rewards — is gone. Just earning isn't enough; you must redeem. Keep your myWalgreens card in SuperCards so you never forget to scan, even on small trips.
  • Walgreens Cash can't pay for prescriptions. You earn on pharmacy but can't spend rewards there. Plan to use Walgreens Cash on front-of-store items instead.
  • $50 per transaction, $100 per day redemption cap. Large balances take multiple visits to use up.
  • Store closures are accelerating. Check that your local Walgreens is staying open before relying on it as a regular stop.

When to Skip myWalgreens

  • If you rarely shop at Walgreens. Unlike coalition programs, this only works at one retailer. Under $50/month in spend and you're looking at less than $6/year — not worth thinking about.
  • If you're a heavy online shopper. Cashback portals often offer higher percentages on health, beauty, and pharmacy items from multiple retailers.
  • If CVS is more convenient. CVS ExtraCare offers 2% base cashback (double Walgreens' 1%) and a more aggressive coupon ecosystem. If both are equally accessible, CVS may deliver more savings for active deal-seekers.
