What Is GO Rewards?
GO Rewards is Stop & Shop's free loyalty program across its ~365 supermarkets in the Northeastern US (Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island). Scan your card, earn 1 point per dollar spent, and redeem for grocery discounts or gas savings at Stop & Shop fuel stations and participating Shell stations. The base return is a straightforward 1% back on groceries โ decent but not remarkable โ with noticeably better value if you redeem for gas.
When Is GO Rewards Worth It?
Without effort: $300/month grocery spend, points redeemed for groceries each month -> ~$36/year
With the 3 moves: Same spend with digital coupons, gas redemption, and bonus point offers -> $50โ80/year
Recent changes: Stop & Shop closed 32 underperforming stores in late 2024 and has been remodeling aggressively since. Savings Station kiosks โ in-store touchscreens that load all your digital coupons without needing a phone โ rolled out to every store by early 2025. Prices have been coming down as part of Ahold Delhaize's reinvestment plan.
How It Works
Where it works: Stop & Shop supermarkets only โ this is a single-retailer program. Gas savings redeemable at Stop & Shop fuel stations and participating Shell stations.
What you earn: 1 GO Point per $1 spent on qualifying groceries, in-store or online. Excludes fuel, alcohol, gift cards (except during promotions), lottery, and postage.
How you get it back: 100 points = $1 off groceries, or 100 points = $0.10/gallon off gas (up to 20 gallons, max $1.50/gallon discount). You must designate your points toward gas or groceries through your online account before redeeming.
What it costs: Free. Always has been.
How to sign up: Register on the Stop & Shop website in about 2 minutes โ you'll get 500 bonus points ($5 off groceries) right away. You can scan your new card into SuperCards via screenshot so it's always ready at checkout.
Member perks: Weekly personalized bonus point offers, digital coupons, and member-only pricing on select items. Manufacturer coupons under $0.99 are automatically doubled at checkout for loyalty card holders โ increasingly rare among grocery chains.
Good to know: Points expire at the end of the month after the month you earn them (30โ60 day window depending on timing). You must actively designate points toward gas, grocery, or donation before they auto-apply โ forget this step and you lose them. Points appear same day for in-store purchases. If you forgot your card, bring the receipt to Customer Service to add points retroactively.
The 3 Moves That Actually Matter
1. Designate Points for Gas โ It's Worth More
100 points redeemed for groceries gets you $1 off. The same 100 points redeemed for gas gets you $0.10/gallon off โ on a 15-gallon fill-up, that's $1.50. On a full 20-gallon tank, it's $2.00. If you drive, always designate for gas. Do this on the Stop & Shop website before your next fill-up. It takes 30 seconds and consistently delivers 50โ100% more value.
2. Load Every Digital Coupon Before You Shop
Open the Stop & Shop website (or just scan your card at the Savings Station kiosk in-store), and load all available digital coupons. They auto-apply at checkout with no extra effort. New personalized offers appear every Thursday. The bonus point offers are especially valuable โ "Buy 2, Get 100 Extra Points" turns a routine purchase into 2โ5x the normal earn rate. No smartphone? The in-store kiosks do the same thing and print a reference sheet.
3. Watch the Weekly Circular for Gift Card Bonus Points
Stop & Shop regularly offers 2xโ5x GO Points on select gift card purchases (restaurants, entertainment, retail). If you'd buy the gift card anyway, the bonus points are pure upside. A $50 gift card at 4x points earns 200 points instead of 50 โ that's $2 in gas savings for a purchase you were already making. Check the end of the weekly flyer; that's where gift card promos hide.
Get Your Points Out (Best -> Worst)
Gas savings โ 100 points = $0.10/gallon at Stop & Shop or Shell stations. Best value per point if you fill 12+ gallons. Max $1.50/gallon off, up to 20 gallons.
Grocery savings โ 100 points = $1 off groceries. Consistent, simple, and guaranteed. Good if you don't drive.

Letting points expire โ The real trap. Points you don't designate before month-end vanish. Set a monthly reminder.
Watch Out For
- Points expire fast. End of the month after you earn them โ that's as short as 30 days. Unlike most loyalty programs, there's no activity-based reset.
- You must designate points manually. Gas, grocery, or donation โ pick before you redeem. They don't auto-apply, and once designated, you can't switch.
- The app is unreliable. Frequent crashes and login issues are a common complaint. Keep your card in SuperCards as a backup so you're never stuck at checkout without it.
- Not everything earns points. Alcohol, gift cards (outside promos), fuel, lottery, and postage are excluded from earning.
When to Skip GO Rewards
- If you have a Market Basket, Aldi, or Lidl nearby. Their base prices are 15โ28% lower than Stop & Shop. A 1% loyalty rebate doesn't close that gap.
- If you spend under $100/month at Stop & Shop. You'd earn fewer than 100 points/month, barely enough for $1 off. Not worth tracking.
- If you're in an overlap area with ShopRite. ShopRite's base prices and aggressive sale cycles often beat Stop & Shop's prices even with GO Rewards factored in.
