What Is the Harris Teeter VIC Card?

Harris Teeter's VIC (Very Important Customer) card is a free loyalty card that unlocks sale prices at ~260 stores across the southeastern US. Without it, you pay full shelf price. With it, you also earn Fuel Points — 1 point per $1 spent — redeemable for up to $1.00/gallon off at Harris Teeter Fuel Centers and participating BP and Amoco stations. The sale prices alone make it essential; the fuel savings are a bonus on top, realistically worth $50–180/year depending on spend and driving habits.

How It Works

Where it works: Harris Teeter grocery stores (~260 locations in NC, VA, SC, MD, GA, FL, DE, and D.C.), Harris Teeter Fuel Centers (~74 locations), and participating BP and Amoco gas stations.

What you earn: 1 Fuel Point per $1 spent on groceries. Gift cards earn 2x points. Prescriptions earn 50 points each.

How you get it back: Every 100 points = $0.10/gallon off fuel, up to $1.00/gallon off (1,000 points), on up to 35 gallons per fill-up.

What it costs: Free. Always has been.

How to sign up: Register at the Harris Teeter website, or fill out a form at any store's customer service counter. Card works digitally right away; you can also enter your phone number at checkout. After signing up, scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot so it's always one tap away at the register.

Member perks: VIC card pricing is the core value — nearly all advertised sale prices require a VIC scan. BOGO deals ring at half price per item, so you only need to buy one. e-VIC members get exclusive Wednesday and Friday digital deals. Every VIC household also gets one free virtual nutrition consultation with a dietitian (not available in SC).

Good to know: Fuel points expire at the end of the month after they were earned — January points are gone by end of February. If you have fewer than 100 points at month's end, they expire unused. Points from different months can't be combined in one fill-up. Check your balance on your receipt or in the Harris Teeter website.

The 3 Moves That Actually Matter

1. Load every digital coupon — zero effort, automatic savings

Open the Harris Teeter website, go to digital coupons, and load everything relevant to your VIC card. They apply automatically at checkout. The Wednesday and Friday e-VIC deals include exclusive pricing on items you likely already buy. This takes 2 minutes a week and regularly stacks an extra 5–20% off individual items on top of VIC sale prices.

2. Fill up smart — don't waste your per-gallon discount on a small tank

The fuel discount applies per gallon, so the more you fill, the more total dollars you save. 500 points at $0.50/gallon off saves $3 on 6 gallons but $7.50 on 15 gallons. Let your tank get low before redeeming, and use Option 3 at the pump to split your points across multiple fill-ups if you won't fill up much. You also get an automatic 3-cent/gallon VIC discount even without redeeming points.

3. Buy gift cards you'd use anyway for 2x points

Gift card purchases (except HT gift cards and variable-load Visa/MC/Amex) earn double fuel points. A $50 restaurant or retail gift card you'd buy anyway earns 100 points instead of 50 — that's an extra $0.10/gallon off on your next fill. During periodic 4x Fuel Points promotions, that same $50 card earns 200 points. Stack this with your regular grocery shopping for fast point accumulation.

Get Your Points Out (Best to Worst)

Fuel discount at the pump — the only redemption option, and it works well. 100 points = $0.10/gal off, up to $1.00/gal (max 35 gallons). Fill up when your tank is low to maximize total dollar savings.

BP/Amoco stations — same rate as HT Fuel Centers, with a wider network. Useful if there's no Harris Teeter fuel center nearby.

Letting points sit below 100 — anything under 100 at month's end vanishes. If you're at 80 points near the end of the month, a quick grocery run gets you over the threshold.

Watch Out For

• Aggressive expiration: Points expire at the end of the month following the month earned. No rolling balance, no mercy. Track your points on your receipt or in the website.
• Under-100 trap: Fewer than 100 points at month's end = total loss. Always check mid-month.
• Not all stores have fuel centers. Only ~74 of ~260 Harris Teeter locations have gas stations. You can also redeem at BP/Amoco, but check participation first.
• Forgetting to scan: No VIC card, no sale prices, no fuel points. Keep your card in SuperCards so you never show up empty-handed.

When to Skip Harris Teeter

• You don't drive or have no nearby fuel redemption location. Without fuel savings, the VIC card's value is limited to sale prices — which are good, but fuel points are the multiplier.
• A discount grocer is nearby. Aldi, Lidl, and similar stores are almost always cheaper on base prices. If saving on groceries matters more than fuel discounts, shop there.
• You spend under $200/month at HT. Below 200 points/month, you're getting $0.20/gal off — about $3 per fill. Not bad for zero effort, but not life-changing either.
