Costa Coffee Club

What Is Costa Coffee Club?

Costa Club is the free loyalty programme for Costa Coffee, the UK's largest coffee chain. Buy a drink, earn a "bean" — collect 10 beans and your next drink is free. That's a straightforward 10% return, which is already better than most retail loyalty schemes. Bring a reusable cup and the rate doubles to 20%, making it one of the most generous coffee loyalty programmes on the high street.

When Is Costa Coffee Club Worth It?

Without effort: 3 coffees a week, no reusable cup → ~14 free drinks/year → ~£60 back
With the 3 moves: Reusable cup every time + smart redemption → ~28 free drinks/year → ~£120 back

Recent changes: Costa increased the threshold from 8 beans to 10 in August 2023 — a 25% devaluation. The reusable cup bonus makes up for it if you use one consistently. Coca-Cola explored selling Costa in 2025 but pulled back in January 2026 — no impact on the programme so far.

How It Works

Where it works: ~2,700 Costa Coffee stores (high street, drive-thru, inside Sainsbury's) plus 12,000+ Costa Express self-service machines across the UK.

What you earn: 1 bean per drink. Every handcrafted hot or cold drink earns one bean — regardless of size or price. Bring a reusable cup and you get 2 beans instead. Food, snacks, and packaged items earn nothing.

How you get it back: 10 beans = 1 free handcrafted drink of any size, including up to 5 customisations. Alternatively, swap 2 beans for a customisation (syrup, extra shot, dairy alternative).

What it costs: Free. No paid tier.

How to sign up: Register on the Costa Coffee website, or pick up a physical card in-store at costa.co.uk. Takes under 2 minutes. Use a referral code at sign-up for 5 bonus beans. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.

Member perks: Free birthday treat — a cake, muffin, or pastry from the sweet counter, redeemable on your birthday and up to 7 days after. No purchase required. Monthly "Treat Drops" deliver personalised offers and bonus beans via the website.

Good to know: You can earn beans at Costa Express machines, but you cannot redeem free drinks there — only in stores. Free drink rewards expire 3 months after they're issued. Beans expire after 12 months of inactivity — one transaction resets the clock.

The 3 Moves That Actually Matter

1. Bring a Reusable Cup Every Single Time

This is the most impactful thing you can do. With a reusable cup, you earn 2 beans per drink instead of 1, halving the number of purchases needed for a free drink from 10 to 5. That turns a decent 10% return into an excellent 20%. Keep a reusable cup in your bag and this happens automatically.

2. Don't Forget Costa Express Machines

There are over 12,000 Costa Express machines in petrol stations, supermarkets, and workplaces across the UK — and they all earn beans. Open the Costa website, tap "Machine", then scan the code on the Express machine screen while your drink is being made. Many members don't know this exists, so they're leaving beans behind on cheaper drinks. Keep your card in SuperCards so it's always ready to scan.

3. Redeem on the Most Expensive Drink You'd Actually Order

Your free drink reward works on any handcrafted drink of any size, including up to 5 add-ons. So don't waste it on a small Americano (~£3.15) when you could have a large iced latte with oat milk and a syrup shot (~£5.50). Same 10 beans, significantly more value.

Get Your Points Out (Best to Worst)

Free handcrafted drink — 10 beans for any drink, any size, up to 5 add-ons. Always choose the most expensive drink you'd actually enjoy.

Swaps — 2 beans for a syrup, alt milk, cream, or extra shot. Convenient if you always customise, but poor value compared to saving for a full free drink.

There's a way to stack even more savings on top of your free drinks — see Pro Tips below.

Letting rewards expire — Free drinks vanish after 3 months. Don't hoard them.

Watch Out For

  • Only drinks earn beans. Food, cakes, sandwiches, and packaged goods earn nothing — not even when you spend £10+ on lunch.
  • Free drinks can't be used at Costa Express machines. You can earn there but not redeem. Frustrating if that's your primary access point.
  • Birthday treat requires marketing consent. You must opt into marketing communications in the website to receive it.
  • 12 months of inactivity wipes your beans. Buy one drink a year at minimum, or everything disappears. Adding your card to SuperCards makes it easy to scan even on sporadic visits.

When to Skip Costa Coffee Club

  • If you prefer independent coffee shops. Their coffee is often better and cheaper. No loyalty programme changes that equation.
  • If you drink 2+ coffees daily. A coffee subscription service will almost certainly save you more than Costa Club's 10-20% return. Do the maths on your actual spend.
  • If you only use Costa Express. You can't redeem rewards there, which guts half the programme's value.
