What Is CAA Rewards?

CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) is a paid membership program that bundles roadside assistance with a nationwide discount and rewards network. Show your card at Shell, restaurants, hotels, retailers, and 124,000+ partner locations across North America to get instant discounts and earn CAA Dollars (1 CAA Dollar = $1 CAD). The roadside assistance is what sells it, but the savings network is what makes it pay for itself — realistically $90–$300/year back depending on how actively you use partner discounts.

Is CAA Rewards Worth It?

Without effort: Drive normally, fill up at Shell weekly, eat out occasionally at partner restaurants → roughly $90/year in savings
With the 3 moves: Actively use Shell savings, ask for the CAA rate at hotels, stack with partner loyalty programs → realistically $150–$300/year

Recent changes: Shell partnership extended through February 2027. AIR MILES is transitioning to Scene+ at Shell (Alberta March 2026, rest of Canada May 2026) — the fuel stacking dynamic is shifting. Maple virtual care benefits were expanded, with Premier members now getting unlimited free GP consults.

How Does CAA Rewards Work?

Where it works: Shell (fuel), Swiss Chalet, East Side Mario's, Montana's (dining), Enterprise, Best Western, Marriott (travel), RW&CO., Dulux Paints (retail), VIA Rail, Park'N Fly, plus thousands more across North America.

What you earn: Instant discounts at most partners (3¢/L off fuel, 10% off dining, 5–15% off hotels). Select partners also give back 1–10% in CAA Dollars.

How you get it back: CAA Dollars apply 1:1 against your membership renewal, CAA Insurance premiums, or CAA Travel bookings. No cash-out to a bank account.

What it costs: Everyday $30/yr (no roadside). Basic $77/yr. Plus $121/yr. Premier $151/yr. Prices vary slightly by region.

How to sign up: Online at your regional CAA website or app — takes a few minutes. Digital card available immediately; physical card arrives by mail. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.

Member perks: Maple virtual healthcare (1–unlimited free GP consults depending on tier, covers your whole household). Plus/Premier get free emergency fuel delivery and extended towing. All tiers get access to the full discount network.

Good to know: CAA Dollars can take up to 90 days to post for online purchases. For online shopping, you need to click through from your regional CAA website or app to earn CAA Dollars — your membership number alone won't work at most online retailers.

How to Get the Most From CAA Rewards

1. Show your card at Shell every time you fuel up

Save 3¢/L on fuel, 10% off car washes, and 10% off in-store purchases at participating Shell stations. With one weekly fill-up of 60 litres, that's roughly $94/year in fuel savings alone — more than the Everyday or Basic membership costs. Keep your CAA card in SuperCards so you never forget it at the pump. Note: not available in Quebec.

2. Always ask for the CAA/AAA rate when booking hotels

Most major hotel chains (Marriott, Best Western, Hilton, Hyatt, Choice) offer a CAA/AAA member rate that's typically 5–15% off. It often beats publicly listed prices and sometimes even loyalty member rates. You still earn hotel loyalty points on top of the CAA discount — double dipping at its simplest. One weekend trip can save you $30–$80.

3. Flash your card at restaurants before you pay

Swiss Chalet, East Side Mario's, Montana's, and other dining partners give 10% off when you show your CAA card. At $40/month in dining at partners, that's $48/year back. Easy to forget, easy money when you remember.

How to Redeem CAA Rewards Points

Membership renewal — 1 CAA Dollar = $1 off your annual fee. Effectively free money toward a recurring cost.

CAA Insurance premiums — apply CAA Dollars directly to your auto or home insurance bill. Underadvertised but genuinely useful.

There's a way to earn CAA Dollars on every purchase you make, not just at partners — see Pro Tips below.

CAA store merchandise — often overpriced compared to buying the same item at a regular retailer. Skip this.

CAA Rewards — What to Watch Out For

  • CAA Dollars vanish if your membership lapses. There's no grace period in most regions. Renew on time or lose everything you've accumulated.
  • Shell discount doesn't apply in Quebec. CAA-Quebec members miss out on the single biggest savings perk.
  • The most common mistake: forgetting to show your card. Most partners can't apply discounts retroactively. Keep your membership card on your phone for quick access.
  • 24-hour waiting period for new members. You can't sign up during a breakdown and get immediate roadside help.

When to Skip CAA Rewards

  • You only want roadside assistance: A no-fee credit card with included roadside coverage offers comparable towing and service calls at zero cost. CAA's advantage is the broader savings ecosystem, not roadside alone.
  • You live in Quebec and don't travel: Without the Shell fuel discount and with a smaller partner network, the savings math is tighter for Quebec members.
  • You spend under $50/month at partners: Your annual savings would barely cover the Everyday membership fee. Not worth the mental overhead.
