What Is Scene+?

Scene+ is Canada's entertainment-meets-grocery loyalty program — scan your free card at Sobeys, Cineplex, Home Hardware, Shell, and a growing list of partners to earn points on everyday spending. Redeem for groceries, movies, travel, or gift cards at a flat rate of 1 point = 1 cent. The base return without a credit card is modest (mostly promo-driven at grocery), but moviegoers and Scotiabank cardholders can realistically pull $50-$200+ per year.

Is Scene+ Worth It?

Without effort: Scan at Cineplex a few times a year, catch a few grocery promos → maybe $15-$30/year
With the 3 moves: Actively load offers, redeem smartly, and time your Cineplex visits → $50-$80/year

Recent changes: Shell Canada is now a Scene+ partner at all 1,400+ Canadian stations as of May 26, 2026 (after an Alberta-only pilot in March). Cineplex restructured its earn rates on May 13, 2026 — regular tickets and concessions dropped from 5 to 3 points per dollar, while premium tickets (IMAX, VIP, 3D) moved up to 6. Tangerine launched a Scene+ World Elite Mastercard ($120/year) on April 22, 2026.

How Does Scene+ Work?

Where it works: Sobeys, IGA, Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland (grocery); Cineplex, The Rec Room, Playdium (entertainment); Home Hardware; Shell (fuel); Swiss Chalet, Harvey's, Montana's, Kelsey's (dining); plus 750+ online retailers via a linked cashback portal

What you earn: At Cineplex: 3 points per $1 on regular tickets and concessions, 6 points per $1 on premium tickets (IMAX, VIP, 3D). At Home Hardware: 1 point per $1. At Shell: 1 point per litre of fuel. At restaurants: 1 point per $3. At grocery stores: points through weekly and personalized offers — no flat per-dollar rate with the base card alone.

How you get it back: Redeem at grocery stores (1,000 points = $10 off), at Cineplex (100 points = $1 off), or for travel bookings — all at 1 cent per point.

What it costs: Free. Always has been.

How to sign up: Register at the Scene+ website in about 2 minutes. Digital card available immediately. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration. No Scotiabank account required.

Member perks: 10% off Tuesday movie tickets at Cineplex, stacked on top of the already-discounted Tuesday price. Works for premium and VIP showings too.

Good to know: At grocery stores, the base Scene+ card doesn't earn a flat rate per dollar — you earn through personalized product offers and weekly promos that you need to load before shopping. Points from in-store purchases appear within a few days. Online cashback portal earnings are paid quarterly.

How to Get the Most From Scene+

1. Load your grocery offers every week — or earn nothing

Scene+ at Sobeys, IGA, Safeway, and FreshCo works like a targeted offer system, not a blanket earn rate. Before each grocery trip, check your personalized offers through the grocery store website, or at mygroceryoffers.ca, and load them to your Scene+ card. Then scan at checkout. Without this step, your Scene+ card collects dust at the register. With it, you'll earn hundreds of bonus points per month on items you're already buying.

2. Redeem for groceries or movies — skip gift cards

Your points are worth 1 cent each when you redeem at Sobeys (1,000 points = $10 off) or Cineplex (100 points = $1 off). Gift cards from other retailers cost roughly 1,400 points for $10 — that's a 29% value loss for no good reason. Statement credits are even worse. Stick to grocery and entertainment redemptions for full value.

3. Use your Tuesday Cineplex discount and watch for half-points events

Scene+ members save 10% on already-discounted Tuesday tickets. On a $7.99 cheap Tuesday, that's an extra ~$0.80 off — small, but it's automatic. The bigger win: Cineplex runs half-points redemption events several times a year where movie tickets cost 50% fewer points. A regular ticket that normally requires ~1,400 points drops to ~700. Time your point redemptions around these events and your points go twice as far.

How to Redeem Scene+ Points

Groceries at Empire stores — 1,000 points = $10 off at Sobeys, IGA, Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland. Full 1 cent/point value.

Cineplex / Rec Room / Playdium — 100 points = $1 off. Same 1 cent/point. Great during half-points events.

Travel bookings — 100 points = $1 on flights, hotels, car rentals through the Scene+ travel portal. Full value, but requires a minimum of 5,000 points.

There's a way to get full 1 cent/point value as a straight cash equivalent without being locked into specific partners — see Pro Tips below.

Gift cards — ~1,400 points for $10. You're losing 29% of your value. Only consider during 20%-back promotional events.

Statement credit — ~0.66-0.80 cents per point depending on the block. Worst option.

Scene+ — What to Watch Out For

  • Points expire after 24 months of inactivity if you don't hold a Scotiabank product. One earn or redeem transaction resets the clock, but don't let your account go dormant.
  • Forgetting to load grocery offers is the most common mistake. Without loaded offers, the base card earns almost nothing at Sobeys and its sister stores. Keep your Scene+ card in SuperCards so it's always ready to scan.
  • The app has quirks. Users report login issues, double sign-in requirements between Scene+ and grocery store apps, and offers that don't always load correctly. Check your points balance after shopping.
  • Gift card and statement credit redemptions destroy value. The gap between 1 cent/point (grocery/travel) and 0.71 cents (gift cards) adds up fast on larger balances.

When to Skip Scene+

  • If you shop mainly at Loblaws, No Frills, or Shoppers Drug Mart: PC Optimum is the stronger program for that ecosystem and doesn't require a credit card to earn a meaningful base rate.
  • If you rarely visit Cineplex or Empire grocery stores: Without partners where you actually spend, the program offers negligible value with the base card.
  • If you spend under $100/month at Scene+ partners: Your annual return will be single digits. Not worth the mental overhead of loading offers.
