What Is Tim Hortons Tims Rewards?

Tims Rewards is Tim Hortons' free loyalty program — scan your card or app at any of the 5,700+ locations across Canada and earn 10 points per dollar spent. Redeem points for free coffee, donuts, breakfast sandwiches, and more. The effective return is solid for a QSR loyalty program: roughly 5–8% back depending on what you redeem for, which beats most credit card cashback rates at restaurants.

Is Tim Hortons Tims Rewards Worth It?

Without effort: $50/month at Tim Hortons, just scan every time → ~6,000 points/year → 15 free coffees → ~$30–50/year

With the 3 moves: Activate personalized offers, always redeem for the largest size, time your redemptions → realistically $50–80/year

Recent changes: The Canadian Tire partnership went live in September 2026 — link your accounts to earn Canadian Tire Money on Tim Hortons purchases. A similar WestJet Rewards link is announced for 2027: linked members will earn WestJet points on Tim Hortons purchases on top of Tims points (no earn rate or exact date yet). Roll Up To Win 2026 brought back physical rim-rolling for the 40th anniversary.

How Does Tim Hortons Tims Rewards Work?

Where it works: All Tim Hortons locations across Canada — in-store, drive-thru, mobile order, and delivery through the Tim Hortons website.

What you earn: 10 points per $1 spent before tax. Simple.

How you get it back: Redeem for free menu items starting at 300 points (donuts, hash browns) up to 1,800 points (loaded bowls). All sizes cost the same points — a small coffee and an XL coffee are both 400 points.

What it costs: Free. Always has been.

How to sign up: Register on the Tim Hortons website — takes 2 minutes. Digital card is immediately usable; physical cards are available at some locations. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.

Member perks: Free item on your birthday (typically Timbits or a donut) — you need to add your birthday to your account at least 7 days in advance.

Good to know: You can only redeem points with a registered card (the digital card or a physical card linked to your account) — the cashier can't do it for you. There's a 30-minute wait between redemption transactions, and you can only redeem one item at a time. Points appear within 24 hours of purchase. If you forgot to scan, contact support through the app with your receipt.

How to Get the Most From Tim Hortons Tims Rewards

1. Always Redeem the Largest Size

All drink sizes cost the same number of points. A small coffee and an XL coffee both cost 400 points, but the XL is worth $1–1.50 more at the register. Same goes for other beverages — Iced Capps, hot chocolate, tea. This alone can push your effective return from 5% to over 8%. There's no reason to ever redeem for a small.

2. Activate Personalized Offers Weekly

Open the Tim Hortons website and check your Offers tab. The app serves personalized deals based on your purchase history — bonus points on specific items, discounts, or free items. These rotate weekly and differ between accounts. Activate everything that matches what you'd buy anyway. Some offers can double or triple your points on a single purchase.

3. Redeem for 300–400 Point Items, Not Premium Drinks

Hash browns at 300 points and coffee at 400 points deliver 0.5–0.66 cents per point. Espresso drinks at 800 points deliver only 0.34 cents per point — half the value. The sweet spot is the 300 and 400 point tiers. If you want a latte, buy it with cash and redeem your points for something with better return.

How to Redeem Tim Hortons Tims Rewards Points

Hash browns, donuts, cookies (300 points) — best value per point at ~0.66 cents each. A hash brown worth $2 for just 300 points.

XL coffee or tea (400 points) — the classic redemption. An XL coffee worth $3+ for 400 points = ~0.8 cents per point.

Breakfast sandwiches (1,100 points) — decent value if you'd buy one anyway, but the cents-per-point starts to drop.

There's a way to get even more value from your points if you hold a certain credit card — see Pro Tips below.

Espresso drinks (800 points) — worst value in the program. A $3.50 latte for 800 points = 0.44 cents per point. Pay cash for lattes.

Tim Hortons Tims Rewards — What to Watch Out For

  • Points expire after 12 months — each batch of points expires 12 months after the month it was earned. No activity-based reset. Check your balance regularly.
  • Registered cards only. Points on a physical card that isn't linked to an account can't be redeemed — link it to your account first. Keep your Tims card in SuperCards so you always have it ready to scan.
  • 30-minute gap between redemptions. Want a free donut and a free coffee? That's two separate visits or a 30-minute wait.
  • Forgot to scan? Not automatic. If the cashier doesn't scan your card, you need to contact support with your receipt. No self-service fix.

When to Skip Tim Hortons Tims Rewards

  • If you prefer a competitor's coffee: Other major QSR loyalty programs offer a free coffee for roughly $20 in spending versus Tim Hortons' $40. If taste isn't a factor, the math favours competitors.
  • If you visit less than twice a month: Under $10/month in spending, you'd earn 1,200 points per year — that's three free coffees. Barely worth keeping the app on your phone.
  • If you only drink espresso drinks: The redemption value on lattes and cappuccinos is poor. You're better off with a credit card that gives strong restaurant cashback.
