What Is PC Optimum?

PC Optimum is Canada's largest loyalty program -- scan your free card at Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Esso, and dozens of other Loblaw-owned stores to earn points on everyday purchases. You redeem points in-store for dollars off your bill: 10,000 points = $10. The base return is modest (1.5% at Shoppers Drug Mart, effectively 0% at grocery stores without loading offers), but with a few targeted moves you can realistically pull $50--150+ per year.

Is PC Optimum Worth It?

Without effort: Scan your card at Shoppers Drug Mart, spend $100/month there --> 18,000 points/year --> $18
With the 3 moves: Load personalized offers weekly, time Shoppers purchases around 20x events, and redeem during bonus events --> realistically $50--150/year

Recent changes: DoorDash joined as a partner in 2025 (5 points/$1). EQ Bank is acquiring PC Financial, but Loblaw keeps the PC Optimum program -- your points are safe. Household group creation was restricted in October 2024. The new PC Insiders World Elite Mastercard bundles the former Insiders subscription.

How Does PC Optimum Work?

Where it works: Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Maxi, Provigo, Zehrs, Fortinos, Joe Fresh, Esso/Mobil gas stations, PC Express, DoorDash, and more -- 4,500+ locations across Canada.

What you earn: 15 points per $1 at Shoppers Drug Mart (1.5% back). 10 points per litre of fuel at Esso/Mobil. At grocery stores, there is no base earn rate with the loyalty card alone -- you earn points only through personalized offers and promotions. This is an important detail most guides gloss over.

How you get it back: Redeem 10,000 points for $10 off at the register, in 10,000-point increments. Also redeemable online at PC Express and partner sites.

What it costs: Free. Always has been.

How to sign up: Visit the PC Optimum website -- takes 2 minutes. Card works digitally right away. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.

Good to know: At grocery stores, your loyalty card alone does not earn base points. You need to load personalized offers each week (they refresh every Thursday) or use a PC Financial credit/debit card for base earning. Points typically appear within 24--48 hours in-store. You cannot redeem points on taxes, fees, or gift cards.

How to Get the Most From PC Optimum

1. Load Every Personalized Offer, Every Thursday

Open the PC Optimum website, go to your offers, and load everything for products and stores you even occasionally visit. If you buy something that matches a loaded offer, the bonus points apply automatically. If you don't, the offer quietly expires with no downside. This turns your 0% grocery rate into 5--15% on specific items, with zero ongoing effort beyond a 2-minute weekly check-in.

2. Time Shoppers Drug Mart Purchases Around 20x Events

Shoppers runs "20x the points" events roughly every 2--3 weeks. The math: 15 points/$1 base rate times 20 = 300 points/$1, which is a 30% return. The minimum spend varies by event (typically $50--$75 before tax). Stock up on toiletries, beauty products, and household items you would buy anyway. A single $100 trip during a 20x event earns 30,000 points ($30). That one trip can be worth more than months of regular shopping.

3. Save Points for Bonus Redemption Events

Never redeem points at the standard rate if you can wait. Shoppers Drug Mart runs Bonus Redemption events several times per year where your points are worth significantly more. At the best tier: 200,000 points = $300 off instead of $200 -- a 50% bonus. Even the lower tiers are worthwhile: 50,000 points = $65 (vs $50 standard). If you shop at Shoppers anyway, the patience pays for itself.

How to Redeem PC Optimum Points

In-store during a Bonus Redemption event -- up to 1.5 cents per point (50% more than standard). Best value available.

In-store at standard rate -- 10,000 points = $10 at any Loblaw store or Shoppers Drug Mart. Clean, simple, full value.

There is a way to squeeze even more out of your points at Shoppers -- see the Pro Tips section below.

Pay down PC Mastercard balance -- 10,000 points = $7 statement credit. That is a 30% haircut compared to in-store redemption. Avoid unless you have no other option.

PC Optimum — What to Watch Out For

  • Grocery stores earn nothing without effort. Scanning your card at Loblaws or No Frills without loaded offers earns zero base points. Load your offers weekly or you are carrying the card for nothing.
  • 10,000-point minimum to redeem. You cannot redeem fewer than 10,000 points ($10). Low spenders may wait a while before reaching the threshold.
  • Missing points are common. Loaded offers sometimes fail to register. Keep your receipts and contact customer service (1-866-727-6468) promptly if points are missing -- it is the most frequent complaint. Keep your card in SuperCards so it is always one tap away and you never forget to scan.
  • Account closes after 2 years of inactivity. If you neither earn nor redeem for 2 years and have no PC Financial product, your account (and points) can be closed.

When to Skip PC Optimum

  • You don't shop at Loblaw-owned stores. PC Optimum is a closed ecosystem. If your groceries come from Sobeys, Metro, Costco, or Walmart, there is nothing to earn.
  • You won't load weekly offers. Without loaded offers, grocery store shopping earns nothing. If the weekly app check-in feels like a chore, the return is not worth it.
  • You spend under $50/month at partners. At 1.5% on Shoppers and 0% base at grocery, your annual return would be a few dollars. Not worth the card slot.
