What Is MOI?
MOI is Metro Inc.'s loyalty program covering Metro, Jean Coutu, Super C, Food Basics, Brunet, and Premiere Moisson across Quebec and Ontario. Scan your free card at checkout and earn points on your regular grocery and pharmacy shopping, then redeem them instantly for dollars off your next bill. The base return is modest (0.8% in Quebec, just 0.27% in Ontario), but personalized bonus offers on specific products can push individual trips well above that.
Is MOI Worth It?
Without effort: $300/month at Metro in Quebec, just scan and go → 3,600 points/year → $28.80/year
With the 3 moves: Activate all personalized coupons, shop around bonus-point products, and redeem strategically → realistically $60-100/year
Recent changes: MOI launched in Ontario in October 2024, replacing AIR MILES at Metro and Food Basics. Over one million Ontario shoppers signed up in the first months. Ontario's earn rate (1 point per $3) is significantly lower than Quebec's (1 point per $1). RBC cardholders can now link their debit or credit card for bonus points at all participating stores.
How Does MOI Work?
Where it works: Metro and Jean Coutu (QC, ON), Super C and Brunet (QC), Food Basics (ON), Premiere Moisson (QC), plus Jean Coutu in New Brunswick
What you earn: In Quebec: 1 point per $1 spent (pre-tax) at Metro, Jean Coutu, Brunet, and Premiere Moisson. In Ontario: 1 point per $3 at Metro, 1 point per $1 at Jean Coutu. Super C and Food Basics earn bonus points only on promoted products — no base earn.
How you get it back: Instant discount at checkout. 125 points = $1. Minimum 500 points ($4) to start redeeming, then in $1 increments.
What it costs: Free. Always has been.
How to sign up: Register at moirewards.ca or through the Metro or Food Basics website — takes 2 minutes. Digital card works immediately. You get 250 welcome bonus points when you complete your account. You can scan your rewards card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Member perks: Member-exclusive pricing on selected products in-store, plus personalized coupons based on your purchase history. No tiers, no birthday rewards.
Good to know: If you forget to scan, get your receipt stamped at the courtesy counter and return within 14 days. Points post within a day for in-store purchases. Keep your MOI card in SuperCards so it's always ready at checkout — missed scans mean lost points.
How to Get the Most From MOI
1. Activate Every Personalized Coupon, Every Week
Open the MOI section on the Metro website, go to coupons, and activate everything for products and categories you even occasionally buy. If you happen to purchase something that matches, the bonus points land automatically. If not, the coupon expires with no downside. This is where the real value lives — bonus-point coupons on products you'd buy anyway can turn 0.8% into 3-5% on those items, with zero ongoing effort.
2. Plan Meals Around Bonus-Point Products
Check the weekly flyer for items offering 25+ bonus points before you shop. Build your meal plan around what's offering points that week rather than sticking to a fixed list. One strategy blogger documented an average 5.22% weekly return by doing this consistently. You don't need to go full spreadsheet — even a quick 2-minute flyer scan before your trip makes a noticeable difference.
3. Redeem Early and Often
Unlike programs that lock you into $10 or $20 tiers, MOI lets you redeem in $1 increments once you hit 500 points. There's no bonus for hoarding — points are always worth 0.8 cents each regardless of how many you redeem. Take the discount the moment you qualify. The lowest redemption threshold among Canadian grocery programs is one of MOI's genuine advantages.
How to Redeem MOI Points
Instant discount at checkout — 125 points = $1 off your bill. Simple, instant, and the only option. Ask the cashier or select it at self-checkout.
Cross-banner redemption — Earned points at Metro? Redeem them at Jean Coutu or Super C (and vice versa). Same rate everywhere.
There's a way to earn 2-3x the base rate on every purchase — see Pro Tips below.
Letting points sit idle — Points don't expire, but your account closes after 18 months of inactivity. No warning, no recovery. Shop at least once every 18 months.
MOI — What to Watch Out For
- Ontario's earn rate is 1/3 of Quebec's. At 1 point per $3, you're getting 0.27% back — barely worth tracking without bonus offers.
- Voiding a single item at checkout wipes ALL bonus offers for that transaction. If you need to remove something, void the entire transaction and start over.
- Super C and Food Basics have no base earn rate. You'll only earn bonus points on specifically promoted products. Don't expect points on your regular shop.
- Some offers only appear on the moirewards.ca website. Banner-specific channels don't always surface every promotion, so check the central MOI site before big shops.
When to Skip MOI
- If you primarily shop at non-Metro grocers: PC Optimum (Loblaws, No Frills, Shoppers Drug Mart) and Scene+ (Sobeys, IGA, Safeway) only work at their own banners. If you don't shop at Metro or Jean Coutu regularly, MOI does nothing for you.
- If you want high-percentage grocery cashback: A good cashback credit card earns 2-4% at any grocery store. MOI's base rate doesn't come close without bonus offers.
- If you're an Ontario Food Basics-only shopper: With no base earn rate and only occasional bonus offers, the return on scanning your card is minimal.
