What Is Petro-Points?
Petro-Points is Petro-Canada's free loyalty program — scan your card when you fuel up or buy anything in-store at over 1,600 locations across Canada. You earn points redeemable for fuel discounts, eGift cards, or Canadian Tire Money. The base earn rate is honest but modest (~0.67% on fuel). The real value unlocks when you link a bank card — but even without that, it's free money for something you're already doing.
When Is Petro-Points Worth It?
Without effort: Fill up 50L/week, scan your card → ~24,000 pts/year → $24/year
With the 3 moves: App promos + smart redemption → roughly $30–35/year
Recent changes: Platinum Status launched January 2026 (1,000L/quarter for 50% bonus points). The Households feature (point pooling) ended March 15, 2026. Triangle Rewards partnership (2024) lets you earn CT Money on fuel alongside Petro-Points. A WestJet Rewards integration was announced in April 2026 for early-2027 launch — linked members will earn 20% bonus Petro-Points on fuel.
How Does Petro-Points Work?
Where it works: 1,600+ Petro-Canada and Gas+ stations across Canada
What you earn: 10 points per litre of fuel. 10 points per $1 on in-store purchases (snacks, car wash, etc.).
How you get it back: 1,000 points = $1. Redeem at the pump, in-store, for eGift cards (Best Buy, Walmart, Tim Hortons, 15+ brands), or convert to Canadian Tire Money.
What it costs: Free. Always has been.
How to sign up: On the Petro-Canada website — takes 2 minutes. Digital card available immediately, physical cards at any station. You can scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot after registration.
Good to know: Points appear within 24–48 hours. If you forget to scan, contact customer service with your receipt — they can add points manually. Activate your account immediately after signing up: points earned before activation expire after 30 days.
How to Get the Most From Petro-Points
1. Activate and Scan Every Single Time
The biggest Petro-Points mistake is forgetting to scan. At 1¢/L, a 50L fill gives you 500 points — skip it 20 times and that's $10 gone. Keep your card in SuperCards so it's always one tap away at the pump. And activate your account immediately: points earned before activation vanish after 30 days.
2. Check the Petro-Canada Website Before You Pay
Petro-Canada runs sporadic bonus offers — extra points on snacks, double points events, bonus points per fill. They're not predictable, but checking takes 10 seconds. When a 50% bonus on in-store snacks is running, that coffee and granola bar just became a better deal.
3. Save Up for Fuel Savings Reward Cards
Instead of redeeming small amounts at the pump, save 10,000–20,000 points and redeem for a Fuel Savings Reward Card (5¢ or 10¢/L for 200 litres). The base rate is the same $1 per 1,000 points, but the structured approach helps you accumulate meaningful savings — and the cards unlock even better value with the right bank card (see Pro Tips).
How to Redeem Petro-Points
Fuel Savings Reward Card — 10¢/L for 200L (20,000 pts). Same base rate as direct redemption, but unlocks bonus value with linked bank cards.
Direct fuel/in-store redemption — 1,000 pts = $1 off. Straightforward and immediate.
eGift cards — 1,000 pts = $1. Opens up 15+ retailers (Best Buy, Walmart, Tim Hortons). Useful if you want your points to work outside Petro-Canada.
CT Money conversion — 1,000 pts = $1 CT Money. Good if you shop at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, or Mark's. One-way only, max $1,000/year.
There's a way to push redemption value above 100% — see Pro Tips.
Charitable donations — Feel-good value only. Zero return to your wallet.
Petro-Points — What to Watch Out For
- Activate your account immediately. Points earned before activation expire after 30 days. Don't lose your first fill's points.
- 12 months of inactivity may trigger account review. Fill up at Petro-Canada at least once a year.
- Keep a card backup. Petro-Canada's digital channels have had reliability issues. Storing the card in SuperCards or your phone wallet keeps you covered at the pump.
- Excluded items: Tobacco, alcohol, gift cards, lottery, and EV charging don't earn points.
When to Skip Petro-Points
- If Costco is nearby: Their pump price is typically 8–12¢/L cheaper — no loyalty program closes that gap.
- If you don't fuel at Petro-Canada regularly: You can only earn at Petro-Canada stations. If the nearest one isn't on your route, don't go out of your way.
- If you fill up less than once a month: Your annual return would be under $5. Not worth the mental overhead.
