Subway Subcard

In this guide

The Subcard programme is closing on 31 August 2026. Subway NZ has confirmed the loyalty and gift scheme will be discontinued. You can still earn Reward Dollars until 30 June 2026 and redeem them until 31 August 2026 — anything left after that expires and cannot be used. A replacement programme branded "MyWay Rewards" has been signalled, but terms are not yet public. Treat this guide as a guide to using up the Subcard before it shuts down.

What Is the Subway Subcard?

The Subcard is Subway New Zealand's free loyalty programme — scan your card or show your virtual Subcard at any of Subway's ~150 NZ locations and earn Reward Dollars on every purchase. You get 3.5% back as in-store credit, which is genuinely solid for a fast food programme. The real value, though, comes from member-exclusive deals that regularly save more than the Reward Dollars themselves. With the programme closing on 31 August 2026, the practical question now is how much you can earn and spend before that date.

When Is the Subcard Worth It?

Without effort: If you eat at Subway between now and June 2026, you'll still earn 3.5% back — and you have until 31 August 2026 to spend it. For someone visiting weekly, that's still $10–20 of free Subway credit on food you were buying anyway.

With the 3 moves: Stack member-exclusive deals with whatever Reward Dollars you bank before 30 June 2026, and redeem everything before 31 August 2026. Realistic value over the remaining window: $30–50 depending on cadence.

Recent changes: The Subcard loyalty and gift programme is being wound down. Per Subway NZ's official terms, Reward Dollars may be earned until 30 June 2026 and expire on the earlier of 12 months from the date earned or 31 August 2026. Any Reward Dollars left after 31 August 2026 will expire and cannot be redeemed. Unspent Gift Dollars at closure are eligible for a refund of equivalent value, subject to Subway's terms.

How It Works

Where it works: All participating Subway restaurants in New Zealand (~150 locations, concentrated in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch).

What you earn: 3.5% of your total spend (incl. GST) in Reward Dollars. Spend $15 on a footlong combo, earn $0.53 back.

How you get it back: Use Reward Dollars to pay for any menu item — full or partial payment. 1 Reward Dollar = $1. Minimum $3 balance required to redeem.

What it costs: Free. Always has been.

How to sign up: Register on the Subway NZ website, or grab a physical card at any Subway restaurant and register it before you redeem. After signing up, scan your card into SuperCards via screenshot so it's always one tap away.

Member perks: Birthday reward — free cookie and drink with any sub, salad, or wrap purchase for about 10 days around your birthday. Plus rotating member-exclusive deals (discounted subs, BOGO offers) available only through the app.

Good to know: You earn nothing on orders through third-party delivery apps (Uber Eats, DoorDash). Must order through the Subway website or in-store. Reward Dollars now expire on whichever comes first: 12 months from when they're earned, or 31 August 2026 — the programme's hard end date. Anything you don't redeem by then is gone. If you forget to scan, ask for a receipt with a claim code and add the Reward Dollars later through the website (allow 48 hours).

The 3 Moves That Actually Matter

1. Check Offers Before Every Visit

Open the Subway website, go to Offers, and see what's available at your local store. Member-exclusive deals regularly include BOGO subs, discounted footlongs ($8–10), and free extras. A single BOGO deal saves you more than months of Reward Dollar accumulation. Takes 10 seconds — do it every time.

2. Always Scan (or Give Your Phone Number)

The 3.5% earn rate only works if you actually scan. Don't have your card? Give the staff your registered phone number to earn on that purchase. Better yet, keep your Subcard in SuperCards so you never forget. At $15 per visit, forgetting to scan just once a month costs you over $6/year in lost Reward Dollars.

3. Spend Everything Before 31 August 2026

With the programme closing, the only mistake left to make is leaving Reward Dollars unspent. Anything sitting in your account after 31 August 2026 disappears. Once your balance hits the $3 redemption threshold, use it on your next visit — and from June 2026 onwards, plan visits specifically to draw the balance down to zero. Check your balance in your Subcard account or on your receipt. Don't hoard, don't wait for a "better" use — there isn't one coming.

Get Your Points Out (Best → Worst)

Pay at the register — 1 Reward Dollar = $1 off your order. Simple, full value, no conversion.

Partial payment — Use your $3+ balance to knock the cost off a bigger order. Same rate, same value.

Timing your redemption around a member-exclusive deal stretches your Reward Dollars further — see Pro Tips below.

Letting them expire on 31 August 2026 — The only bad "redemption" is no redemption. Anything in your account after the programme closes is gone for good.

Watch Out For

  • Hard programme end date: 31 August 2026. Earning stops 30 June 2026, redemption stops 31 August 2026. Any unspent Reward Dollars after that date expire and cannot be recovered.
  • $3 minimum to redeem. If you visit Subway infrequently, you might not hit the threshold before the programme closes. At 3.5% earn, that's roughly $86 of spending to unlock your first redemption — worth weighing against how many visits you actually have left in the window.
  • Third-party delivery orders earn nothing. Uber Eats and DoorDash purchases don't count. Order through Subway's own website for Click & Collect instead.
  • Franchise participation varies. Deals sometimes don't apply at every location — if a deal doesn't work at one store, try another nearby Subway.

When to Skip the Subcard

  • You only have a handful of Subway visits left before August 2026. With earning ending 30 June 2026 and redemption ending 31 August 2026, infrequent visitors will struggle to hit the $3 redemption threshold in time. If you're at less than one visit a month, the maths probably doesn't work.
  • You only order via Uber Eats or DoorDash. Zero Reward Dollars earned. The Subcard is irrelevant for third-party delivery orders.
  • You want cash back, not Subway credit. Reward Dollars can only be spent at Subway — no bank transfer, no vouchers, no flexibility. If you'd rather have actual money back, a cashback credit card gives you less per dollar but in real cash.
